Purple deaths coloration

I bought it as a 1 polyp frag. Shape is similar but coloration looks nothing like other purple deaths I've seen. Any suggestions?

If I remember correctly, the guy that first introduced the Purple death paly had it in his sump for a while because it was not that pretty. Over time it finally got its color. Perhaps yours is still getting used to its new environment (lighting/water parameters). It's not unusual for zoos andd palys to look different from tank to tank. This is especially true for any purple and blue colored zoos and palys. The best ting is to contact the person you got it from and see what lighting he had it under. My guess is he had it under 20K lighting.

Thats pretty normal looking for PD, if you ask me. You need strong 20k bulbs and maybe some actinic on top of that to pull out those strong purples.

i have 14k and mine look more purple. I will try to get a pic for comparison. I do probably have high nutrients as I am constantly feeding golden pearls, cyclopeeze, phyto, etc to the tank.
Just suggestions......... Scott

are they at the bottom of your tank? i have mine inder 15k and half way and are a nice bright purple. if anything trade out those 50/50 for some nice actinics only. a true blue and a super actinic.

hello del sol,

I noticed some unique shelves you have set up in your tank and on this pic. Are they homeade or where did you get if I may ask. I have contemplated making some eggcrate shelves but these you have look ready to go.
Thanks in Advance, Scott

those are modded toothbrush or soap dish holders that use a suction cup. I just use a dremmel to trim. With a little lesser light you get a deeper purple instead of the brown hint you get like in the first pic on the thread.

I have mine under a 14K MH and they are super nice purple with green rims. I got mine from cherrycorals.com. Really nice guy to deal with. Thise do not look like PD's to me. I have seen a lot of PD and I have sold mine to a few people and everyone has been happy with them.

Jduck, from what I have noticed the stronger the light the more brownish color.. I have mine under 2x175 MH 14k and 80 watts of T5 actinics and they are a deep purple.. I have mine on the sand bed a little shaded but not much... Even without the T5`s they are deep purple...

Nuclear Greens protopalys. Just like the PD's. They're starting to take off now. I got a whole bunch of new polyps since those pics.

omg, I am soo excited that someone else has this problem. I have PD's that started purple and grew brownish like your pic. They grew really fast and I have been wanting to trade etc, but felt guilty they were not as purple anymore. I recentley moved and in doing so put them lower in the tank. the new growth is purple again. I have a 14 gallon nono with 10 k, actinic and hyper (lots of light for this tank, i put in an extra). They are 1 inch of sand and loving it!!
Good luck!!
