Purple Firefish

I just bought, and acclimated my new purple firefish. When i first released him into the dt he swam around so i thought everything was okay. so i went back onto the computer i come back 5 minutes later bam he is no where to be found(checked carpet for him ) Do they bury themselves in the sand because i dont have much rock and ive checked all the nooks and crannies for him. Where is he?!

do you have a overflow? firefish are famous jumpers, if he jumped, do you have a cat or dog that might have ate him?

they are also pretty good at wedging themselves into decorations and rocks.

No cats or dogs, and i already checked everywhere in overflow to make sure he wasnt there, he is a pretty sly fish...

They hide well the first few days. alot of them can fit into little holes and tunnels.

You could be looking at my firefish one second, then POW! gone!

they are jumpers tho, if you have an open top, you should start putting some thought into some kind of barrier.

I built this canopy to protect my watchman goby and firefish. I haven't been leaving the egg-crate on top tho, i figure the 8" wall should be enough...

Mine has favorite holes in the rocks that he hides in when he's scared. He always come out when I feed, but then I've had him over a year and a half. Yours may not be so easily coaxed out of hiding.

When i bought the fish i thought i was paying for a fish with personality that actually swam around.

I barely saw mine for the first month. it just came out to eat. after awhile it started coming out in the back of the tank, still barely visible. Now he comes out all the time. It just took a while for it to mellow out. It'll still vanish in the blink of an eye though.

I wouldn't really say they have personality per say. Its a fairly skittish fish, especially when you first buy it.

i have two red firefish...they come out and dive into the rock work as soon as someone walks by the tank....they do like to jump into my overflows that have eggcrate over it..so it is possible for them to get thru...but most likely they are just hiding
