Purple Hornet Zoas

Hi! I'm new to the whole forum thing. I've been watching this and a few other forums for some time now and decided I would give it a try. I have a 135g reef setup (about nine months old now) and my wife and I are really enjoying it. I've had fish since I was nine years old and we had a saltwater fish-only tank for the last ten years until we set up our reef tank. This is way more fun! As we stock our tank, there are a few "high-end" corals we are looking for. Among them is a polyp or two of Purple Hornet zoas. We are happy to pay a "reasonable" amount for it/them plus shipping to LA. If anyone knows a good source for them, please let me know.

Check frags.org I know there are a bunch of reefers in the LA area that have that. or Check with AquaSD/ReefPets/ebay any of those has it. they go for between 80-100 per polyp. I got lucky on my ebay price and it already has 2 new babies.

Thanks to everyone who has posted replies so far. It's all very helpful. If I can force myself to hold off, I will probably wait a little while to see if the come down. Interesting point, stevensun. Will I still love them when they're selling for $10/polyp? I would hope so but there is obviously some part of each of us that equates price with intrinsic value. I really do think the Hornets are striking though (at least the pictures I have seen).

IMO, once other polyps that become the next it thing, they surely will start to command the polyp collectors interest there for lowering the asking price for other HOT polyps right now.

But I think once the price goes down, at most you start to see them at an avg. of 35-40 from online vendors and LFS. And about 15-20 from fellow reefers. That is once it saturates the market.
That's just my opinion

Glad you got my point. I think the beauty of coral shouldn't be decided by the price tag on it. The premium charged by sellers mostly derives from the low supply. For collection reason, I understand that some people are willing to pay as high as over $100 for one polyp. For me, reef keeping is not about investment and return; it's just a hobby of mine. Having seen purple hornets in person, I have to say the common whaming watermelon is much more attractive to me as far as beauty is concerned.

if you pay 100.00 per polyp make sure youre getting the "true" purple hornet...
How do you know...distinguishing characteristics?

I got the liniage for mine traced back to the fellow who origionally named them (actually, his wife named them).
