Purple Monster

Here's the biggest my colony ever got

Struggling to keep a piece alive.

Heres my dumb question for the day: As far as I can tell, the PM is about the most $$$$ SPS coral that I have seen, may not be the most $$$$, just the $$$$ that I have seen. Keep in mind that I have never seen this coral with my own two eyes. I have seen pics of alot of SPS corals that IMO are far better looking than the PM, so why the big price tag for a very small frag of this coral?

mainly because it grows so slow, Mine grew about 4 inches in 1.5 years while some blue torts/stags grew more than 16+ inches in size.

Here are a couple of shots of one of mine. The polyps turn white when the coral gets larger. In my sytem it is hardy and it is a fast grower.

To address the value question. Why does it cost so much? In person the coral is stiking. People always notice it in my tank and there are some nice corals in with it. It is an old coral with a clear history. A lot of old timers got their original colony a long time ago when real nice corals were still rare. I can trace the pedigree of mine back to Steve Tyree. Although it is a hardy coral and fast grower, if conditions are correct it can be finicky and hard to keep long term. By long term i mean longer than five years. Ironicly the coral will grow from the smallest frag and being so expensive people tend to frag it aggresively so its very unusual to see a large colony. Small colonies are less able to recover from severe stress so people are more apt to loose small colonies. All in all, I paid, a lot for mine several years ago and I am happy to have it today. (Paid a lot more for my golden flake angel and i cant frag him.)

Thank You, 90 percent of the corals were local frags. So yes over the years I have known a dozen or so reefers here in Tally that I would consider "serious" . Some of them still mess with the SPS. If you havn't been to any local stores lately, next time you come to town for a game, check out Scott who owns High Tide. He has put together one of the nicest little salt water aquarium shops that i have ever visited. Very nice corals for sale, and decent pricing. (sorry dont mean to hijack a thread)

Speaking of PM frags is anyone willing to part with one, if so pm with the size and price. I am in Houston, Texas but willing to pay for overnight.

I think the difficulty in trying to frag it also plays a role in the higher price. Branches are short and stubby an tough to break off.

Since its suck a slow grower most people never see a decent colony before they have a crash of some sort and end up fragging it down anyway. This is a cool thraed ive never seen such large colonies before!

Lucky enough and aquired a big frag from Mr. Pluto, in my tank for 5 month, hope I can grow it to a colony.
As you can see I can fighting with cyano in my tank, very frustrating.

Hoping to get a PM sometime this year! (fingers crossed)
Just waiting for it to get fragged when they feel it is ready!

I have about a three inch wide by 2 inch high colony. It has green polyps at the base and whiter ones up by the tips. I'll definitely post pics of it tomorrow. This is one of my favorite corals in my tank
