bought 2 purple queen anthias last week
1 of them MIA while the other keep hiding

should i get another 2 to build up her guts?

thanks

I would see if you can keep the one alive for a couple of months first. They are supposedly one of the hardest to keep anthias, good luck. I have a sunburst and an ignitus, and they were both difficult to start eating. Is it eating at all, what have you tried to feed?

They rarely eat. IME they should be left in the ocean. I would not get another unless you can keep the one you have alive for a while.

About 8 months ago I purchased 3 Queens from Reef Hot Spot. Of the 3, only one ate. Two died in the first three weeks, but the third is very alive and healthy, and now eats anything I put in the tank. Flake, mysis, mush, flakes. These guys are kinda like mandarins, imo. They need enough of the stuff they would normally eat in the beginning, but if you can keep them past the "hump" they start to notice all the other foods.

did you single purple queen transform to male?

in that case i guess i should wait few more weeks before buying another 2

thanks all

anyone got tips in keeping purple queen?

Leave them in the ocean.

I also bought one before doing the proper research. Mine was eating and seemed to be doing ok although it would constantly hide. I have not seen it now in several months and am sure it's dead now. I hate seeing them in stores because I know of their low survival rate. I wouldn't buy another one.

I agree. They are traditionally very difficult to keep long term, but clearly a beautiful fish. I would look skeptically at any LFS that sells them.

You should QT your fish especially anthias before introducing them into your display tank. It would be easier to see if its eating and to monitor the fish if its in a tank by itself. It would also reduce some of the stress on the fish since it does not have to compete with the others for food.

When I put food in my tank my lyretails and tangs eat the food in less than a couple minutes. My point is that if I introduced a new fish that was not agressive at eating it would never get any food.

I hope your fish starts eating but you should consider using a QT in the future.

decide to stick to 1 purple queen

right now swimming happily in the open
how long does she takes to morph into male form?

thanks

one thing id like to get off my chest, how many of the people who posted actually have experience keeping them? or did you just read that? yes they are a moderately challenging addition but nothing someone with some experience under their belt can't handel. i personally went hrough 3 when i started but 7ish weeks ago i added 10 now im down to 9. if you can get them comfortable quick and get them to eat (eatting is a big bart but GIVING THEM WHAT THEY NEED WHEN THEY NEED IT is a bigger part) feeding 3 times a day helps alot, but 2 a day will sufice, they need a high protien diet will alot of amino acids and vitamins, along with some vegitable matter in it. if you know how to keep them and can devote the time(2 times a day) to give them what they need then there not going to be anything above moderate diffuculty

oh and she might never change, but if she does then couple of months, close to half a year maybe

I have two, alive for eight months and going... beautiful fish, best left in the ocean. IMO 2x a day feedings are not sufficient... mine eat 3 times a day and are still losing weight.

I regret buying them because they've turned my 'reef' tank into a 'fish' tank. They require a lot of time and energy, and even if you're lucky enough to get a healthy specimen it is difficult to keep your SPS from browning out due to the amount of food they require.

Save yourself the trouble, stick with the one...
