is it possible to put a SEBAE anemone in an 8g bio cube?????? it has 36 watts total 1 10,000 k bulb and 1 true 03 atinic. it has basic filtration, and yesterday i added a submersible pump. all of my reef stores said that it was possible, but i am taking a big risk becasue it would only live for about 8 months at the most.... :(...
its ok with me because im going to get one for 8$... :) and its pretty big, it has purple magenta tips...would it be possible???

At the LFS I work at there is a sebae in one of our display tanks that hosts a pair of 30 year old clowns. It is easily the size of the footprint of a 24g tank.

I would *highly* recommend against this. I wouldn't want you to waste even your $8 nor the animal's life.

If you feel you MUST have this anemone is there perhaps a friend or club member's tank in your area that may be willing to keep it until you could upgrade to something larger? There are some really nice 45g and even short sized 70g tech tanks out there that would be ideal for an anemone tank.

In the end ultimately you'll make your own decision but if you're open minded and truly willing to listen to advice, I would pass up on the deal and you can put that $8 toward a fantastic colony that will thrive much more successfully and not need as much space as a sebae anemone.

Why would it only live for 8 months? Anemones can potentially live for hundreds of years in the wild (some researchers believe that they do, but no one knows for sure how long they live).

Even if it is only $8, I would pass on it...8 gallons is quite small to provide the stability that these creatures need to live in captivity.

I would advise against that selection, even if you were able to maintain the stability and water quality in a small system.

Either of the anemone species typically called "Sebae" will completely take over such a small space in weeks to months, if healthy. If unhealthy, they are going to make quite a mess in a small tank, complete tank crash sort of mess.

Have kept quite a few "sebae" and every one of them has reached 12"x12" in weeks. This species is not fond of fragging or starvation, so it is a poor risk for an 8gal.

Not to mention, $8 or a healthy purple "sebae"? Something is wrong there, mis identification, lack of health, etc.

do you think a colony of ricordias would do better instead???

oh yeah and hold would it take for a small colony of zoo's to multiply into a big colony???

thanks again....

Ricordia would be a much better choice. I would go with the Florida Ric's over Yumas though.

A zoo colony grows exponentially, hence 1 polyp takes quite some time to cover a rock. A starter of 10 polyps, will cover a rock in no time at all.

Ricordeas would be a better choice, but I haven't done much reading on them, so I can't say what sort of special care they need.

It depends on the zoanthids, some varieties multiply faster than others. They're definitely cool corals though, best of luck!

Ricordia and Zoo are probably the prettiest in a small nano type of setup. It's a bit unfortunate that their prices are being push so high nowadays due to the hype and demand :) Still remembered the days that ricordia florida are sold by the large rock as "colored mushrooms". :)
