Purple spots on Acropora yongei

Can anyone tell me what is the most likely cause of the purple spots in the attached photo? Tissue is not sloughing off but I can't see any polyp extension either. Water parameters are okay. Changed from 175W to 250W MH about 6 months ago, but these spots only started to appear about a month ago. No pattern, seems to be random over the entire coral and multiplying slowly. All other SPS in tank are symptomless and doing fine.

Thanks,

George

The pic on my blkberry isn't the greatest but from what I see it looks like they are just coloring up at the tips. that would happen if the water parameters are in check, and it may also be because you upgraded the lighting

i had the purple spots on my slimmer before and found that they were actually the flatworms we hate. I have no idea where the color from but it seems after a flat worm has munched on them i see purple. Dip the whole coral and let us know what you find. I hope i am wrong.

Doesn't look like growth to me. Hope it's not flat worms. It really looks like coralline ... but I'd guess that is just about impossible on healthy coral tissue (I've certainly never heard of it).

the coral appears to be very healthy, definitely not flatworms or coraline, really wierd though..... i like it!

Thanks all for your input. I can't see any evidence of something haven eaten down to the "bone" and I cannot see eggs or anything else that could be associated with flatworms, so maybe it is not flatworms. I don't think it is normal growth either, none of these spots has ever taken off and started a new branch and some have been around long enough to do so. About the only other thing that I have not mentioned is that once the tip of a branch grew close to a nearby rock and normally it would have grown over it and encrusted it, but it never did. Instead, this same purple discoloration occurred just back from the tip and the branch never grew over the rock. It was as if something on the rock irritated it. That's what this looks like to me, sort of like a rash due to irritation but there is nothing obvious I can see doing the irritating. Mucous is never produced as it does when this species is perturbed. Also, I have seen normal color return to a spot that used to purple. I guess I will just be patient and keep an eye on it.

in the penn state tank there is a bali yongei that is being hit with so much light it shows purple growth tips.

see if new axial corallites form from all the purple spots in 4 weeks...that just might be your answer

That happened to mine a while back when it was growing to the top of the water a right under a 400W XM 10K.

Could be. I've only got 250W but it is right under it in the top third of the tank and I've got pretty good clarity with carbon and O3.
