i have a purple tang in my 120g and i just added an atlantic blue tang. i thought that since its shape and size arent the same as the purple tang, he would leave the ABT alone but aparently, he now chases the ABT around and attacks it.

is there any way to reduce this hostility? Will it go away over time?

Sorry to say...your tank is probably not going to be big enough to house another tang after you put the purple tang in first and let him get 'comfy'. The atlantic blue is going to get real big anyway. It's not only size and shape that you need to pay attention to, but also color and food competition. The purple tang will not like the atlantic blue because it is also an algae grazer...and the blue isn't that far off from the purple. (unless it's a juvie)

turn off lights & cover tank for a day it will calm. I have 17 tangs in my 150 I make sure they are fed well & they dont fight .It is a good rule to add 2 or 3 tangs at one time & move the rocks around in your tank to make new hiding places & your old tangs will be misplaced & not fight.

17 tangs? hahaha

my tank i think is still a bit understocked. i only have the 2 tangs in it, a few bangaiis, a mystery wrasse, and 2 clown fish. my rockwork is pretty heavy so im sure they wont run out of hiding places.

Wow I haven't laughed that hard in a good while. But seriously the guy is OBVIOUSLY joking that he has 17 tangs in a 150. I don't think it's even physically possible. If so, that is definitely one tank I'd want to see a pic of.

cant get them all in one shot .this should start the buzz. I think about 7 in this shot purple mimic orange naso hippo powder brown & powder blue.also have chevy black yellow flamefin & others HA HA HA HA. It can be done without harm.Yes I will be getting a much larger tank soon & it wont be the last .

How about we keep this on topic and civil? Fish crazy, how long have you had all those fish together? Judging from the size relation to the corals and cleaner wrasse they're not that large.

Would the kole tang be a better match for the purple? i called the LFS and i can still exchange it for a kole plus store credit.

IME&IMO: An established PT in a 120 will seldom tolerate any other tang. I love these fish; but thing they are more aggressive than most folks think. BTW; is this 120 a 4' long tank? If so, that will really increase aggression with the PT.

Thats pretty impresive

Honestly, since you added the purple tang first...you're probably done adding tangs to this tank. Matter of fact, the purple tang might not let you add ANY fish to this tank without major harrassment. The tank is pretty small for 2 tangs anyway, with one being pretty aggressive.

Sorry if I was uncivil in any way I just was making a point. the fish have been in the tank together for about 2 years some of them longer. My largest tangs are my naso & orange at about 4" the rest are 2 1/2" to 3". In regards to the pic it is an older one so the fish & corals may be a bit larger now. One more thing about the blue tang IMHO is that should be the last tang you put in the tank because they are one of the most agressive tangs you can get next to a sohal.

+1 on the purple It will bully the other fish at least for a few days

I can't take it...this must be said.

Having that many tangs in that size tank is an atrocity. There's no way the fish should be that small being in the tank that long. A naso tang and an orange shoulder tang would be MUCH larger than 4" after 2 years in a properly sized system. That gives an indication that something is wrong and they should be moved...like 2 years ago.

Agreed. Its repulsive to even think about. No less to suggest to others.

You seem proud of the fact that you are subjecting those fish to very very poor conditions. I am sorry, but that is nothing to be proud of, should be the opposite.

With all the advancements in the hobby, since I started, keeping fish alive is relatively easy; some tanks sound like puppy-mills for fish, without the breeding angle. Having them thrive is another story---and the reason I'm in this hobby.
