3FordFamily how long have you had those tangs together in your tank and what was the order of adding them? Are they in your 180? I have a desjardini and yellow in my 180 right now and I'm hoping I can add a purple too but not sure if I can do it. When I added the yellow after the desjardini (desjardini was a 6" big guy already) they NEVER fought, just mingled right away. But I am not sure if the same can be expected of the purple?
They've been in there for 6 months or so. I added the sailfin, purple and yellow at the same time. The sailfin died (I moved it for bio load reasons and the tank he moved to had a pump that electrocuted the water and he didnt make it) My wife loved the D.Sailfin so I bought another. He did get somewhat bullied for a few days. The OLD sailfin was the tank boss. Very docile. I had zero issues. However, in his absence my purple tang took over and she is MEAN. The good news though is that she just chases them for a little while, and now they all school together. My NEW D.Sailfin is actually starting to hold his own and may take over the tank as he grows.
I added the PB and Achilles at the same time. LA did not send me fish the same size as I ordered, which was frustrating but it worked out. The smaller PBT got flack from the purple for a day or so (not too bad) and then everything settled. It's been quite awhile and they get along swimmingly (pun intended). I used to have a chevron (I added at same time as the sailfin, i try to add 2 at a time) but it randomly died. Was healthy as a horse one day, next day was tuck on the powerhead. No aggression was ever shown to it by the purple. Not sure what happened. Was not torn or beat up at all.
Anyway, the achilles have been the most easy going fish I have ever owned. I have bought a few from LA before I got one that lasted more than a month despite good water parameters. I also attribute that to the fact that my refractometer was way off on calibration. It read 1.026, but when I suspected an issue I bought another one and calibrated it, and it was 1.019-1.020! If you know anything about achilles, they tend to like saltier water. 1.026-1.029 in my experience. I keep my tank at 1.027 and she's very happy. There IS ich in my system and she's never shown a spot. Not even when first introduced. The powder showed a couple but fought it off quickly.
Powder blues on the other hand are 1/2 evil and 1/2 sweet. Some of them are nasty as snot and the others are very easy going. My current PBT is very easy going. I have had some that relentlessly attack and kill every addition and I've had to sell them to someone with a very aggressive tank. I wonder if this has to do with the sex of the fish?
Yellow tangs are less aggressive than purple, but more than sailfin and D. Sailfin in my experience. My sailfin have always been pretty easy going relative to other tangs but my achilles have ALL been very easy going. I had one for about a year that I bought GIANT from a friend leaving the hobby and at 7" it was still kind. Didn't survive a tank move, though. Very sad.
The tang police is going to get ya for having all those tangs in a 180.
I have a Purple, a Yellow, a Powder Blue, Yelloweye Kole, and a One spot foxface in my 320 gal tank and I consider this nearly overloaded with tangs.
I was already warned for calling someone the tang police. I really disregard this, my fish get along great, are all fat and healthy, and that tank doesn't have a lot of other fish in it. Not my first rodeo in this hobby, and I worked at an LFS for awhile in my early college years. Let them whine, I will keep having happy, healthy fish.
