So back in 2003/2004 I bought a beautiful 3-4inch purple tank for 80 dollars. I was at the LFS yesterday and theyre selling for 200 these days?!
What happened...?
It also depends where you go as well. Near me I have at least 8 shops that carry them on a regular basis. One place always has them at 89 for a small 2" one. That is the lowest for a normal price and the most expensive for that size is 180. All the other shops prices fall in between. And the larger the fish the larger the price, although the cheapest shop just had them for 60 bucks for Black Friday.
Picked one up a couple months ago from my LFS (quality marine products) for $75 whole sale. Was only 2-3" though. Noticed the prices have gone farther and farther up with red sea fish as the political situations over in that part of the world get worse and worse. Also herd that depending on where you live its sometimes cheaper.
1. Red Sea fish are well worth the extra money... many unique, beautiful, and hardy fish are from there. Even non-endemic species just look nicer from that area.
2. As someone that remembers the days of $1000 asfur angles, I'm not going to complain about current prices
The price of Red Sea fish goes up whenever the Middle East flares up. This has been the case for at least a year now, there was a period when Red Sea fish weren't available at all (in any number). I assume it will get worse; because of the latest uprisings in Egypt & the Israel-Hamas situation. Live fish would be very low on the priorty shippng list if things get any worse and collectors/shippers don't want to get stuck with a lot of fish. I think Yemen is still a major shipping location and that's right in the middle of possible trouble.
Has anyone noticed, that most problems people have are with the low end species like Clowns, Damsels and such?
You don't often see a "Why is my Zebrasoma gemmatum doing this?"-thread...
I think it's great that the prices are a bit higher. Not saying that it's great that people have to pay more, but when you DO pay more, then you might keep a little bit better care of that fish.
When folk buy these 10 dollar fishes they don't even care to check out about the fishes requirements - they just get a new one when the old one dies!
I mean not us, but others
In Kansas City you can expect to pay around $150 for a medium sized PT. Every now and then a shop will run a deal on small 2-3" PT for $99. Although the local Petco here had medium PT for $99 a couple months back.
If you're continuously seeing HLLE in PT at your LFS then I'd stop going to them. They obviously aren't giving their fish the proper care and nutrition they need.
When the purple tangs are stocked at the big wholesalers they are kept in tiny cubes. The fish don't do well and they break out with HLLE very quickly.
I've found that these fish turn right back around very quickly. In my outside refugium tank lit with just sunlight they HLLE heals up in less than a week.
In my display tank (same water) with artificial light and feeding just Romaine lettuce in a community tank with lots of other tangs it takes about two weeks or so for the lateral line to clear up.
They are super hardy fish. As great looking as they are in the aquarium, outside in the sunlight their colors are stunning.
