so after 6 weeks of my small naso being in qt I put him in my DT. My DT is a 260g 7 feet wide custom tank and I've got a purple tang that's been in DT for 2 weeks. the second I put the naso in he started harassing it and won't stop. I know the purples are aggressive but did not expect this kind of behavior. I feel like its going to kill the naso. is it just telling him what's his territory or is he trying to kill it?

naso is 2.5 inches and purple is about the same.

Purples are aggressive and should be added last if at all. That's the way they are only other thing that worked for me was to add more than 1 fish at a time

I was under the impression that naso are more aggressive than purple thats why I added him last. guess I was wrong

He will kill him, if nothing less he will quit eating soon from stress. The naso should be much larger than the purple if you're going to add him after.

The purple will most likely harass the naso to death. I added my purple last with a desjardini twice its size.

Purple tangs are like 3rd on the list of Tangs for aggression behind the Achilles, Powder Blue, and Shoal, IMO. The tank is big enough but the Purple should have been the very last fish introduced into the tank.

The purple is impossible to catch. what i've done is isolated one side of the tank with eggcrate acting as a divider. Will leave him on that one side until the naso gets comfortable and hopefully that should help. I dont know if anyone else has tried this or something similar?

I made the mistake of adding a Tomini too early in my stocking and it would go after anything I added after.
Found a random thread somewhere (RC maybe?) about a "mirror trick."
Basically involves putting a mirror up against your tank to distract your aggresive fish. I let my Tomini fight himself for three or four days, took the mirror away and voilla, no more aggression.
It seemed to calm down all the fish in the tank too as by the end of the second day they would all gather together in front of the mirror to fight their reflections.

Naso is a pretty mild-mannered fish and will lose out in most encounters with already established tangs. Purples can be aggressive, though no more than the other zebrasomas frankly. That you had the naso in QT is an excellent start as it gets them eating well. There are some things you can do, like taping a mirror to the side of the tank. Fish are incredibly stupid, and the purple will spend his/her time attacking it's reflection. Other than that, a bit of fighting is to be expected, and some ripped fins; but if the naso cowers to the point where it doesn't eat or shows body wounds, you'll need to remove one of them.
