Purple tang

A 90 gallon is not long enough for a purple tang. They need at least a 5ft long tank. I am simply going off the guidlines here. You should look into fish that it says a 4ft minimum. Some good canidates are the yellow eyed kole tang and the tomini tang. Have you read all of the stickies in the New to the Hobby forum here If you haven't I highly suggest doing so, if you post your intended stocking list with equipment, amount of rock and sand, filtration(sump, HOB filter, etc...) here then you will get great feedback on your stock list from Steve(snorvich).
 
I have seen them in 90 so that's why I ask and I'll have a hundred twenty pounds of lr and a swc cone skimmer and a jawfish a small wrasse and a pair of clowns mostly a coral tank
 
I tried this in the past (( twice )) and it didn't work out -- in an 4 foot 75. The tank just isn't long enough. It will work out for about a year (( give or take, depending on how big of a fish you start with )), and then the purple tang will, most likely, turn pretty darn aggressive. The last one I had would actually draw blood on my male Clarkii clown near the end of its time with me.
 
I tried a PT in a 4' 150g. It grew VERY fast and became very aggressive. I had to remove it... luckily a friend with a giant reef took it.
 
I have purple tang in 90 gallon tank. His roommate is chevron tang. I had them for about 9 years. My tank is 56 inches long so it is almost 5 feet LOL
 
In my experience with Purple tangs is that they do much better from an aggressive point of view in lightly stocked tanks.

4 foot length isn't an isssue if it's 90g or above & you have a specimen that's around 3" or less & is the only tang. I doubt he'll outgrow the tank.......... I've never seen it happen.
 
Ok thanks guys I think I'll trie it my tank will only have a few fish in it and he'll be my show price if he gets two big my dentice has a 250 gallon tank that he can go in

That does seem to happen a lot........I love it when a post starts out "has anyone ever.....? Of course, someone, somewhere has done just about everything. When the magic answer appears---the thread mysteriously ends. I call this "instant gratification and justification".
 
You know the minimum tank size for tangs sticky is in place for a reason... Plus with such an expensive fish, why even try? You are probably better off using that money to go towards more/better equipment... But I guess it is your money.
