Purple Tang

My purple tank gets blanched out patches on his body from time to time...anything to be concerned about? He's eating...otherwise seems healthy.

My blue tang gets this, although I don't know if its bleached out spots, or sand or dust or something - because it disappears usually within an hour or two. Usually on his lower half, but once, it showed up on his anal fin (is that the right name?), on both sides, like a bleached spot.

Purple tangs are extremely hardy and very expensive. I had one that survived a white spot disease infestation (cryptocaryum) but later lost it to an oodinium (velvet coral fish disease) that probably came in a live rock that was purchased from a local fish dealer. It had grown to almost 4 inches when it died.

It could be your tangs stress colouration pattern. My PT would bleach out all over when in stress mode (at night or when feeding, ect...) and was very vibrant the rest of the time. I never saw patches of colour loss, but if this is something that is coming and going rapidly and the fish is acting normal otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for all of your inputs...I did a water change a few hours ago, and he is already looking better! Guess maybe he was stressed a bit since it's been a while since my last h20 change!

Mine does it when the lights go out. His entire body "bleaches" and looks more transparent except for his lateral line. My black clown used to does this every time she eats, but I'm not worried since I've had her for a year now :)
