has anyone tried the Purple Up product that is supposed to help grow more coraline? I have many patches growing in my nano, but its growing very slowly.

PURPLE uP

PURPLE uP

IME, it's snake oil -

Just keep your CA and ALK properly balanced, and with adequate lights you'll get plenty coraline without adding crap to your water...

what he said and magnesium

Purple Up by itself will make coraline grow. I did an experiment on a tank. I dosed nothing but Purple Up in a new aquarium for 3 months. Coraline covered most of the back wall, and all plastic parts.
I used Purple Up in conjuction with a 2 part Cal/Alk regimen...and coraline grew at an even faster rate. I think the magnesium in the Purple Up is the reason it works.

I would not recommend using Purple Up (or Purple Tech - Kent Marine's version) solely. I have not seen any negative effects on either tank so I can't say to not use it. I would recommend using a 2 part with Purple Up, or a good Magnesium additive.

I have to agree with Rendos on this one I got a bottle of this and then started dosing this in a new tank and it started the neuscence :D of scraping glass a lot earlier than normal.

the 3 months mark is when that usually happens anyway if ca, alk and mg are maintained.

My tank has been up and running for almost 11 months now and I "just" started seeing coraline grow on my equipment parts. I've had LR with coraline on then in the tank since it was new, and calcium has been up over 400 the whole time. Plus I dosed purple up throughout the life of the tank...Did it help? I dont think so, 11 months seems like a long time to start growing.

My LFS guy swears by it and uses it in his nano which is almost completely covered in coraline. (he started the nano the same time I started mine)

So who knows????

I don’t know why you would want to cultivate something in you tank that is going to grow on its own and over run your tank. Honestly I don’t know why you would want to cultivate something in you tank that is going to grow on its own. Why are we is such a rush to get good coralline growth. It goes against what we were told from day 1, “slow and steady”, Coralline is a good sign of things going right in your tank but I would still classify it as a PITA. Take it from me, enjoy the 3-11 months that you have not scraping that calcified stuff off your glass every week. (Those with older tanks will know what I’m talking about. Let it develop naturally. Coralline is a good sign of things going right in your tank but I would still classify it as a PITA.

i bought purple up and thats what i use to dose stuff needed...and not worry about using different containers...

BUT i got in the hobby a year and 8 months ago and untill about 3 months ago my coraline never picked up.

the LFS will make it sound like a magic potion...dont believe it.
