pvc or flex

setting up 75g rr perfecto aquarium with 30g sump- is there a preference between the flex or the pvc.would think that the flex hose would be quieter.

i use a combination of both - with a little clear vinyl as well. the bottom line - fewer or more gentle curves will help increase flow and decrease noise. i use the vinyl for the first foot or so on each end of the return pump to lessen vibration

the hose that goes on the outlet of the return pump is smaller than the return pipe so what do i do there?

I don't know what sizes each are, or if they are barbed, but theres an adapter for almost anything. Using a larger pipe would get you more flow, as there would be less head loss.

Upsize it, at the outlet barb.

Flex is definately quieter. Schedule 80 is quieter than sch40, which is quieter than sch 26. I would go with the bigger size and adapt it at the last possible part of the run. As James mentioned they sell adapters for everything. Sometimes you might need to use more than one adapter to get exactly what you want, but it can be done.
