PVC purple primer ?

I got home to late to use the search engine so I will ask the mass's.

I am making a PVC frame for my live rock and was told to use the purple primer then the adhsive to bond the peices. There are a few parts of this frame where I need to bond the outsides together. This area will have quite a bit of purple primer to clean the surface. Have any of you guys/gals had any issue with this primer? If you didn't use it how did you clean the surface of the PVC? I don't want to use this if there is a chance that it will leach something back into the water. I thought I saw at a fish shop that is closed down now that had some PVC for fish to hide in that was bonded with this but not sure.....Any help would be appreciated. I am doing som revamping my reef this weekend and have half of this built and don't want to go any farther. I didn't think about this untill this morning on my way home from work...(3rd shift)

Thanks,
JimW.

I have used the primer before cementing without problems (for sump/fuge plumbing, closed loop, and standpipe in overflow). As long as you give everything time to dry you shouldn't have any issues.

potable glue? not sure I understand what you mean....I used the glue that is for PVC only not a overall adhesive or the kind for CPVC. It was clear and look and smelled like Weldon but much thicker.

Thanks for the replies so far does make me feel much better about this.

Purple is fine, just let it dry and you're good to go. They also sell clear primer that works fine in case you don't want any purple to show.

You're fine. Just let it dry like said. I "painted" my LR PVC racks that are in the tank with the purple stuff so it if there were parts that showed they would blend with coraline.

I too have "painted" large sections of pvc with the purple primer to help it blend in better. It's only been about a month now, but no problems with the livestock. Saw many, many references to it being safe and used for this purpose on this site before doing it. It is, after all, made to be used on pipe that may be used to carry drinking water for people. Same with the glue. Once it cures for 1-2 days, it's safe. Also, I feel it's better than paint because it can't chip or peel.

Clear stuff is available everywhere I think. Home Depot has it in the same area as all the other PVC solvent stuff.

Why use glue at all? Just dry fit everthing together. Most frame work will stay together by themself. Later, if you take it out you can reuse all the parts.
