Pylons Tank!

Added the shrimp. I dumped a half cup of salt in to the back of my tank. It's just sitting there. hopefully the pumps will pick it up and mix it up. If not I'll try to siphon it out and mix it up a bit

Added another half cup of salt, I'm up to 1.018
Did some test too..
Sw Range 7.8
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrate Between 0 &.25
Nitrite Between 0 &5.0

Berhapse it was still to early to do a test and notice a difference.

And now on to the good stuff.. pictures.

First.. deadstock?

I think a bloom starting on my rock.

I love that last picture, it turned out good I think.

That is a cool picture.
I'd say you're on your way. Keep pouring that salt it! When I mentioned going slow I was only referring to when you were getting close to your target level.

Todays Dest
Nirate 0
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
PH 8.1

Did I have a mini Spike?
I deff have a bloom going, I"m thinking it's safe to take the shrimp out tonight or at the latest tomorrow morning.
and for the good stuff.. pictures.

Alright, So I havn't had power since early yesterday morning. Running off of generator power. I didn't test yesterday but I did today. Here is the results

Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Ph 8.4
Ammonia 0.25

I think I missed the cycle yesterday.. I'll wait a couple more days before getting some snails just in case.

pylon, take your time. I think the .25 reading you are getting is just the very beginning of your spike, then it should last for say a week, then nitrite spike for a week, then nitrate for a week.

Ditto. You throw snails in there and they'll b dead in a couple of days. Then your cycle will really be off and running.

DJ

Alright, I'll hold off on the snails then.

Good job. Buy them when you can feed them something. The rock, and walls of the tank should have algae on them, and the system parameters should be nailed down before the snails go in. Understand that in most instances, excluding echinoderms, molluscs are going to be the most sensitive critters in the system. Only bad things happen quickly in a reef tank. Take your time with this and learn. Patience will serve you.

DJ

Yeah, I"m not in any hurry at all.

Another test today shows that Ph is at 8.2 and everything else is 0.
I'm hoping the first cycle is done.
I defendtly have growth in my tank be it algae or just the first diatom bloom. I left my camera in the truck which is now surrounded by ice. I"ll get it tomorrow and upload some pictures.

Cool. Looks like Bryopsis shoots. Are you feeding the system? You kind of want to keep this nitrification process going for when you start adding critters. Not alot, mind you just a few pellets or something every once in awhile to keep the wheel turning. Your levels still might bounce around a little esp within the first few weeks upon 'completing' the cycle, so hanging loose for a bit longer would be advised - you know, 'just in case'. You want to make sure everything is as nailed down before adding anything of value.

DJ

I havn't bought any food yet. I was waiting to get my first live stock. What should I feed the tank with?

Sinking pellets work well, but any fish food would work. Frozen, pellet, flake. Anything that simulates bio-load.

DJ

Okay.
It also looks like I have growth on my Glass and on my substrate.

I'll have to head to wall-mart and look for sinking pellets. If they don't have any I'll have to run to the next city over to the fish store there.

Make sure that what you get is something that you can use down the road to feed the varmints that'll eventually inhabit the system. No point buying something that you're not going to need later. The algae is a good sign.

On another note. The gravel you've chosen is a hair on the large size. You're going to trap alot of crap in there. Not good. You may either want to pull some of that out, and make the bed thinner (less crap trapt), or add some sugar sized oolytic to it to fill in the gaps. If you have any local reefers that you could borrow, or buy some livesand from that'd even be better. It'll make it easier on your burrowing types as well (Nassarius, wrasses, etc)- won't be so abrasive on them and easier for them to move through.

DJ

Hey man thanks for all of your help so far. The bottom layer is live sand and the top is crushed coral. For some reason I never really mixed them togeter.

I really didn't see any pellets at wal-mart. All the flake food they had looked like is was for gold fish. I did see a tropical mix there but I wasn't sure if that was good or not. I'm at the library now, wheni get home I'll
mix up the sand some.
