Q on adding tangs...

Hey guys,

So im looking at getting 3 more tangs

Blonde Naso
Purple
Achilles

Now i have a Chevron in the tank as we speak, and i was planning on adding them in this order:

Blonde, Purple, Achilles...

BUT i was wondering if it would be ok to add the purple before the naso or would u say wait? Reason i ask is because ive been keeping a eye out on for them on DD and a nice purple popped up but i wanted to wait to see what you guys thought.

Otherwise i just have some wrasses and anthias i will be adding but i can add them down the road

Thanks guys!

Pending the size of the Chevron, I don't think you will have any issues regardless of the order you add them.

My tank I had the Chevron first, Purple, Achilles, and then a tiny juvenile Chevron - in that order.

I also have 9 yellows tangs and two blues. So there is lots of activity, and almost no aggression.

curious as to why you want to add the achilles last? I don't have experience with these species, but from my research, it would indicate to me that you should add the purple tang last as it will probably be the most aggressive.

Add the purple last the zebrasoma species of tangs are the most aggressive

Actually the Achilles will be far more aggressive then the purple ;-) All of the purples i've had accepted new tank mates, my Achilles will chase anything new I put in the tank...definitely put the Achilles in last!

I don't think Achillies are in the same league with Sohals or Clown Tangs. IMO, Achilles are about average on the aggression scale.

We'll have to agree to disagree with that... The achilles I have now is the most aggressive tang i've ever had, tried once to add another fish and will never try again after he almost killed it in 10 minutes. Also, years ago when I was in charge of some of the reef exhibits in Baltimore we would never add tangs after an achilles or sohal because of the aggression.

I don't think it makes any difference what order the fish go in. Fish don't read the rulebook. 7 tangs in a 180 is really pushing it.
You are planning 7 tangs in a 180? .

In addition to my experience in Baltimore...I can give you the names of a few other people around here to contact with achilles, they're also unable to add any further fish because of the aggressiveness :-)

But as much of a PITA mine is, I wouldn't trade him for the world, great personality and eats food out of my hands :-)

lol where did u get 7 tangs from my friend? :) I want 4. I have minimal rockwork so i think it will be fine for them.

I want to add everything ive been told is that the achilles is the most agressive too, i appreciate all the input you guys are giving me!

Having kept both together, I would recommend the Achilles before the purple. There are a lot of generalizations being tossed around in this thread. It is very important to remember that fish are individuals and not every individual acts the same. Some Achilles are aggressive, some are not. Some people here have complained about their Achilles getting pushed around by everything. I've had one with that temperament myself. If anything, even a wrasse, swam near it, it would shy away and keep to itself. Some are terrors, but you hear way more accounts of murderous purple tangs. Having seen purple tangs bully Achilles both in my tanks and in those of friends, I would add the Achilles first. They are definitely the more delicate of the two, and would fare worse than a purple tang if bullied by tankmates.

Tangs get aggressive after they establish themselves in a tank. I can assure you if you put a purple in before the Achilles you will be taking the Achilles out of your tank

I have a few friends with purple tangs, I would defiantly add it last as it will prob be the most agressive (once established) just keep an eye on it. It will prob go after your chevron first as they are similar in shape and size. Just my $.02
And it sounds like your doing research which is great. Just to give you heads up my blonde naso grew 3"+ in one year so look for a small one. They are semi tough to get eating as are the Achilles to, but once they do...they never stop :-) good luck to you.
