QT Bio-Filter

I use a HOB filter with something like a bio-wheel for QTing fish. If I find the need to QT something other than fish like a coral or invert, I don't usually use a bio-wheel type filter, just some carbon and maybe a sponge and a powerhead. A canister would work fine too.

I'm thinking a 10g QT for fish, corals, and possibly curing liverock. I kind of like the idea of a canister because I could "seed" the sponge with my current aquarium without taking up space in the sump. My sump is small and crowded. On the other hand, the bio-wheel looks like an effective solution that acts as a wet/dry filter, just not sure how I would "seed" it from my current DT.

Would the bio-wheel likely work for curing liverock?

To seed it, just bring over some live rock or some sand from your DT, the bacteria will populate the wheel. Once the wheel has been seeded, yes, it will help cure your live rock, or you could just put some new uncured live rock in your QT and let it go through a cycle all by itself, but it will go faster if you can bring over some LR.

run the bio wheel on the display tank and or sump for 3-5 days and then transfer it over to the qt--it will have all the bacteria on it you need.

I had a bio wheel and was not a big fan.I now have a hob aquaclear and i like it alot better.I keep a spare sponge in my sump so i have it when needed.

Rockymtreefer, do you place your sponge passively in the sump, or is it connected to flow? And why do you like the hob aquaclear so much better?

Capn, I have limited space in my sump. Do you have any recommendations for a canister?
