QT cycle

I know some of y'all don't cycle your QT, but I planned to have this 20 gal up for awhile.

Anyway, I started cycling just after Thanksgiving. Used ammonium chloride and Dr. Tim's. My ammonia finally hit zero after about 8.5 weeks.

But I'm still at .05 ppm nitrite after about 10 weeks.

Any advice on getting over the hump here? Would extra surface area help, like a new dish sponge (safe?) or extra air sponge?

Current Equipment list in QT: aqueon hob filter, 150 watt heater, air bio-sponge, and 2 2 inch pvc fittings.

Thanks.

i wouldn't worry about nitrites too much unless they are in the double/triple digits.

this article would help put you at ease.

from the article, the LC50 of most marine fishes are in the hundreds to thousands ppm. at 0.05 ppm, toxicity would probably be negligible.

Ah, that's very interesting. So in the saltwater hobby then, it's recommended more to ensure there's enough bacteria?

Should I dose to 1 or 2 ppm ammonia, see if it dissappears in 24 hours just to make sure?
