QT - Formalin-MS

Do you treat all clowns and other fish for Brooklynella with Formalin-MS prophylacticly in QT after Prazi(worms, flukes) and copper (Ich), or do you wait to see if symptoms pop up?

For clowns & Brook, I take the wait & see approach. Brook doesn't hide in the gills the way Ich does. If a clown has Brook, you will know it early on in QT. Same goes for any fish with Velvet. Only problem with both is usually by the time you do see symptoms, it's usually too late for treatment to be effective.

Formalin is also more toxic than copper and other treatments routinely used prophylacticly.

The only thing I don't get about that then is by the time you'd catch brook it would be in your DT and then you'd have to go fallow plus then treat in a HT or QT wouldn't you?

If you quarantine all new fish for 6 weeks or so; brook will show up there if its present. It can be cured, or run its course, before fish get to the DT. One of the main reasons to always use a QT.

Prophylactic treatment with CP would take care of brook and velvet, wouldn't it?

In theory, yes. I believe CP can clear a fish of Crypto, Velvet, Brook and even Uronema in as little as 10 days. Because I believe CP is effective against parasites in all stages of their life cycle. Right now that's just my little pet theory. Extensive testing needs to be done for it to be proven correct. I am QT'ing my last two fish right now (my DT is full); so after them I plan on buying fish with visible Crypto cysts, photograph/document them, and begin testing my theory out. :eek1:

Awesome! I look forward to that thread. Make sure to let us know!

I think you're right. My experience with CP is limited; but the sources that like the stuff are people who know. I assume the fact that CP is supposedly available by Rx has stifled marketing of the drug.

Took me a bit - thought CP was Copper Power!

Hadn't heard about Chloroquine for brook, but looking at the mechanism of action, it may. Curious if anyone has experience with it? Does anyone know of a source for it as well?

Thanks. I found one source, but they sell it by the Kilogram. A bit much for my 29 gal QT!

I can't vouch for him personally, but a lot of people seem to be buying from this guy. I have the same size QT; and just 25 grams would allow you to treat 20x prophylactically or 10x if you encountered full-blown symptoms.

I have purchased from his as well and recently used it to save a pyramid butterfly with velvet. It was sensitive to copper so i tried CP instead and so far (3 days ago) fish is better except slow to regain its appetite.
