Qt... How far do you take it

Ok so I understand fish qt. corals too. But let's say we are talking about something like ich. Do you quarantine all clean up crew too for 72 days? Almost impossible for some snails that need detritus. But still certain life stages of ich can "ride in" with anything wet. So... Opinions?

You're not likely to get consensus on this one. I QT my fish mostly to get the acclimatized and eating, dip and observe my corals for a few days, and everything else goes straight in once adjusted to the temperature and the salinity. Some say to QT everything, but in my experience I have lost more through QT because of the instability of the environment rather than their purchased health. I've been very fortunate, no disease or parasitic outbreak for 8 years over two tanks. When it comes to ich, I'm one of those who believe ich is in every system and the thing that best avoids it is not QT but to feed your fish well.

Well I bought a parrotfish that was WAY too big for my existing qt but of course was assured healthy. No my tank is in hypo. Before I got him, none of my fish had it. Afterwards I spotted a spot here and there on one or two fish. And some scratching. All were very well fed and tank is way under stocked so no stress. Anyway I'm getting s bigger qt tank for the last couple fish and just was wondering to what extent I should take it. I plan on having a copper qt and my nano then for corals

You may not get a consensus, but you will find the most vocal supporters of a good QT protocol have learned this lesson the hard way!
The LFS I buy inverts from has them on a separate system from the fish, so no worries there.
Most my LFS keep separate systems for fish and coral as well, so again no worries. Dip the coral and into the tank it goes.
ALL fish get TTM and a month QT, no matter what the wife says. Not doing QT will never again be the cause of a fallow tank for me.

Yep I learned the hard way too. I'm s believer now. My lfs I think uses same system for crabs and snails as they do fish. Anyone know if live aquaria keeps them separate? Do coral dips kill ich? I've always done that and even heard of people using Bayer insecticide dips

I still haven't figured out what to do on that one. I had velvet come in on a coral frag that was dipped per directions in CoralRx, so I would be stunned if CoralRx kills ick. I lost half of my fish. We have not purchased any corals or cleanup crew since this incident over 4 months ago...

SO is setting up a 40g tank (from a 30g) as a frag tank. I think we will end up using that tank as a clean up crew quarantine once it is up and running.

Well, when everything works out like its supposed to here is my QT schedule.

one week obs
two weeks prazi
one weeks obs
two weeks metro
two weeks obs

all in all 8 weeks. Should I do 12? Probably. If I decide to buy one more tank and start prophylactic TTM, then it will extend it out that far. IME if crypto doesnt show up after 8 weeks, it usually doesnt. Not that it cant, but its a calculated risk i think.

I'm sorry but what is obs? I was planning on copper meds then prazi for fish. I was going to do 72 days for corals. But that's for ick. What if something like velvet is on corals? Will it die out?

Don't QT corals or inverts.

Corals because I don't have suitable QT lighting, and inverts because I trust ReefCleaners.

QT new fish:

Tank Transfer method for 12/13 days for 4 transfers, with Praziquantel treatment on transfers 2 and 4.

Then a week of observation, paraguard treatment if needed.

Then 2 weeks of Chloriquine Phosphate (ie: Ick Shield Powder)

I learned the hard way. I always followed a strict QT regimen for fish, but never for corals and inverts. I added a clean up crew I got from Live Aquaria and it introduced ich to my system. I was ich free for 3 years before that. Ended up losing about half my fish. After going through the fallow period and treating my fish for ich, from here on out I plan on QT'ing all corals and inverts before they tech my DT. Just not going to risk it again.

I'm also going to make every fresh go through Prazipro and Cupramine treatment while in QT as a precautionary treatment. I do not want to risk ich or any other parasites ever again. It's a nightmare. I know there are mixed opinions on treating healthy fish, but I'm personally not going to rise it again.

I agree.

Obs = observation. Sorry, force of habit.

Well, typical fallow reccomendations these days for oodin is >6 weeks and the fallow period for crypto is 9 weeks I believe (trying pull all this from memory here so someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

So I think if you have the equipment to QT corals (and corals only, QTing fish with them defeats the purpose obviously) for 9 weeks you should be ok, both the velvet and the Ich should die off.

i wish my lfs followed this protocol. they have an invert tank and a coral tank. i stopped buying from them months ago because they will once in a while throw a fish into these tanks. ugh!

Me too! I just can't trust any retailer now. Just bc there is not a fish in there today doesn't mean there wasn't one in there yest or that a piece of coral wasn't in a fish tank

I recently introduced digitate hydroids on some cheato. So frustrating. I've been QTing everything else, but I didn't QT the cheato. It's a struggle, but from this point on, EVERYTHING gets qt'd before going into the main system. Including snails, macro algae, EVERYTHING.

Fallow for ICH is 72 days.
