Qt new fish question

I bought two clowns about a week and half ago. I watched them at the shop for a few weeks and both looked good. I have them in a 10g qt right now. Been there for just over a week. First few days I just worked on getting them used to the new environment. They adjusted well and are really active and always wanting to eat.

I started them on a preventative copper treatment with cupramine. After a few days the fish were acting a little sluggish so I changed out the water and ran carbon to clean out any remaining copper. Fish perked right up and started acting fine.

I am thinking about using Seachem metroplex instead. I have read it is a little easier. Mind you I am not treating for anything active. This is just for prevention. My plan is 21 days of metroplex dosing, every 48 hours. Seachem says it treats ich, velvet and Brooklynella. My fish show no symptoms but I figure if they are sitting in qt I may as well. After 3 weeks I was going to move them to a new tank for a week to observe and then put them in my main tank. Does this sound ok? Fish are eating well. They don't have any white spots or coatings on them. No stringy poops. They are just happy go lucky clown fish.

Copper is tough on all fish and I would avoid it at all costs. I haven't used metroplex so I can't speak to if it will treat ich and brook since thats likely what the clowns came in with, even if you don't see outward signs. I use Chloroquine Phosphate on new arrivals unless they are known to have a adverse reaction to CP.

+1 If you have to use copper, try Copper Power instead of Cupramine. Also dose Metroplex every 48 hours for the first 10-14 days to prophylactically address the possibility of Brook in clownfish.

Ok. Fish are actin a lot better and doing there normal stuff since I removed the copper.

So you would recommend 14 days of treatment for brook? Should I still go the full 21 days for ich and velvet preventative treatment?

Plan after that is to then remove them from current system and drop in fresh tank to observe for another week or so.

Aside from a 45-minute formalin bath upon arrival, a preventative measure against Brooklynella, Uronema, and the like, I would refrain from dosing seemingly healthy fish with a barrage of harsh chemicals just because they might have something. That is pretty much the equivalent of putting someone through a full round of chemo and radiation therapy because there is a statistical chance that they may have some cancer somewhere.

All those toxic chemicals so many expose their fish to on a whim may actually do more harm than good by weakening the fish and their immune systems and by that opening the door for all kinds of infections.

If new fish behave and look fine I would just observe them closely for 6 to 8 weeks. Alternatively, you can put them through a round of tank transfers in combination with formalin or H2O2 baths.

Copper for 30 days to treat Ich + Velvet.

Metroplex every 48 hours for 10-14 days to treat Brook + Uronema.

^^ You can combine those treatments.
