QT Tank Confusion

Hey All,

I have had a pretty bad outbreak of Marine Velvet that made me setup a QT tank. I even ripped my complete system down bleached the rocks tossed the sand and the whole thing! The only nice thing was I got to redo plumbing and redid my sump.

I have some pretty large tangs and am a little confused about filtration.

I made a qt out of a 75 gallon with a sump and have been trying to run hypo with cuprion. I have some PVC but not really large enough for the big guys to get in. I was thinking about throwing some rock in the tank for hiding(knowing I will have to toss it or keep it for the Qt).

What I am confused about is do I do water changes? Will this take the copper out of the water? I have a skimmer in the sump which I guess will only be used as a qt slimmer now.. Should I add some kind of bacteria to the tank for filtration or will the copper just kill it of anyway?

I guess what am asking is what really would be the best setup for this so ammonia levels do not rise etc?

Thanks

Definitely do water changes as needed. Since ionic coppers, like the one your using, ideally need testing and redosing daily to maintain therapeutic dosages anyway there is no point in not doing water changes if you need to ;) As for biological filtration, it's always best to use a fully cycled biological filter...otherwise frequent large water changes are your friend to keep ammonia down.
