QT Tank Size

Think I could get away with a 3 gallon QT tank? I'd have to leave it on my kitchen counter, since I don't have space anywhere else (condo living). My DT is 10 gallons, so obviously I'm not tossing tangs in it.

I didn't QT my last 2 fish (my only 2 fish) and got lucky. The place I'm considering getting my next fish (Royal Gramma) from is apparently Ich-Central (I'd like to avoid the place, but Royal Grammas just don't show up here very often it seems).

I'm in Canada, not really an option. The only 2 good places in Canada online that are recommended by folks are local to me, and they don't have them last I checked.

So back to the original question about the QT tank size...

IMO three gals is a little small--I wouldn't go under 10 gals--or you are going to be changing the water daily if not more.

The usual time for qt a fish for treatment and or observation is usually 4-6 weeks . That's alot of time to rely on a 3 gal.

Go to BA's and pick up a 10 gal tank for 15 bucks--they are not expensive.

is it possiable, yes you can use a 3 gal. but remeber if you ever have to do hypo or such look how hard it will be to keep the sg stable due to evapoartion, you will have to either set up a good ATO or you would have to top off every couple hours or the sg will raise and there goes the treatment.

just something to keep in mind. IMO I owuld also go with at least a 10 gal.

Again, the only reason why I'd consider something smaller is just because of room, not cost. Sitting a 100 pound tank on my counter top for 2 months probably isn't the best idea.

<sigh> I need to figure out what to do. 3 gallon is out.

I hear you try this site --you may be able to pick up a used stand and tank for next to nothing

Capt'n, do you know any Canadian tank builders that are good.? What I could do it get a tank built that is larger than my current tank (but still fits my stand). 24wx17dx14h would be the max I think I could go. Then I could turn my current tank into a QT and have a larger DT.

Still don't know where I could keep the QT... maybe in my bedroom.

I wouldn't reccommend a QT on a kitchen countertop. Fish in QT need darkness and quiet surroundings for at least the first few days to a week. Do you have a closet you could put a 10g QT in?

I have QT fish on kitchen countertops, next to washing machines, and am currently QTing a lawnmower in the mudroom. Depending on the fish and the location its a good idea to "wrap" the QT with some newspaper or something similar for a few days and then slowly remove the wrap as the fish gets used to the movement in the room.

have you looked into rubbermaid containers? they make them in all kinds of strange shapes and sizes. the one for wrapping paper is very tall and skinny. should be big enough for anything you could reasonably keep in a 10 gal.

I try to keep my lawn mower out of the house--my wife kind of insists:lol:

fbnitro--I really don't know of any---the main DT I bought from BA's and it was a miracle
my other tanks I have picked up used

Looks like a Marineland 28 gallon Euro bowfront might be okay (size wise) if I wanted to upgrade the tank and turn the current one into a QT. Although my HOB fuge would no longer fit because of the bracing on the tank... plus of course I'd need some better lights because of the depth.

Hmm... might be a bit tall on my 4 foot tall stand. Love how looking into a QT turns into a possible tank upgrade.

I'm on my 4th qt tank--the first one became a 30 gal cheato/dsb fuge, the second became a fowlr tank, the third will be a macro garden with a lion fish in it---the 4th is a 15 gal which I bought small so I wouldn't be tempted to use it for something else:lol:

Having a QT bigger than my actual tank... I don't know about that one.

What sort of lighting do is recommended for a 18" deep tank? I've got Zoa's and with more room I'd probably consider some LPS's. 96w T5 or 150w MH?
