QT Water after Ich death

I recently obtained a powder brown tang with pretty bad Ich (white spots on face/body). Anyway, I made sure to fresh water dip him, then I quarantined him, and was going to start copper treatments (Cuppermine).

This morning I found him dead in my QT. It's a pretty bare boned QT, so do I need to replace ALL of the water in it, PVC, and filter, etc? How do I get rid of Ich from the QT system?

Ich will die off on its own course when there is NO fish (any fish) after six to eight weeks.

Ich can kill if treatment is too late, otherwise it is very curable.

Did you have nitrification in the QT?

If not, next time be sure that the medium in QT is cycled. In fact, the time to cycle is about the same as that for ich to die off.

So just cycle the medium in QT and wait for ich to die off at the same time.

I see... but I cannot wait b/c my fish store asked me to bring it back for an exchange, so I'll have the replacement fish later today. They said I can only exchange it for the same item today and cannot just get store credit to use later.

So do I need to clean out the tank water completely? how can I rid the QT of ich? Do I need to buy and set up a new QT?

no you dont have to remove all the water and everything else. i would just get the new fish, acclimate slowly, and then treat your new fish with copper. treat it with copper and watch it closely. i like the product copper safe. very important: start treatment today. the fish will be fine after about two weeks.

If you already have a firm plan to eradicate ich in QT, the present of some ich in QT water to start with is not critical.

Critical is nitrification in QT, always anywhere any water. Never expose your fish to any level of ammonia if you can help it.

How long does a sponge filter need to be in the display tank's system before it's ready to move to the quarantine tank for use there?
