Quality Marine???

Anyone have knowledge of this company that sells to retailers called "Quality Marine"???

My local LFS uses them exclusively for their livestock and swears they are the best in quality of fish and no one else locally can buy but him. He proceeded to tell me all the good things and that they come with a high rating.

Reason for the question is that in 6 month period, I bought 15 fish from them. In that time I lost all of them for no reason...some in just 1 day others in 5 or less. Confronted the owner yesterday and he swears it is not the supplier or his display tanks. I asked about "cyanide caught" possibility and got a 10 minute lecture on why his supplier is the best and does not proactive that.

Fish I bought from them maybe as most lasted 3 months before perishing. Odd thing is that I have other fish in the tank from other stores and to date none of those have died or gotten sick and they are anywhere from 1 to 2 years old.

LFS owner pretty much won't budge on any compensation or some form of discount for the amount of money I spent in there. I understand fish can die and that is normal in our hobby but 15 from on LFS?? Give me a break at least one should still be alive. The fish I bought were hardier fish and not difficult. I have been in the hobby 10 years so I am not stupid or a newbie. I also heard from others that have lost fish as well from this store but still insist they are great.

Tank is fine, parameters fine, all checked out...ruled every possible scenario on my end. The fish I purchased were all properly acclimated, feed a good diet and were never in danger in my tank. In fact the fish ate great and never showed any signs of stress of disease...that tends to lead me to think something is wrong. I do not have an predators in the tank as well. Nothing! Even temperature swings or levels off for one day are not present. Just baffled...

Any thoughts on this?

Everything I've heard is that Quality Marine is by the far one of the best wholesalers out there. In fact, from what I understand, that is who LiveAquaria uses to ship out the "regular" fish from their site.

They are by far the best to order from as far a quality goes. No pun intended.

The animals are shipped very well and rarely come in with any problems.

With cyanide most fish are dead within a week, usually less.

What species of fish are you purchasing?

I have had the opportunity to do some business with Quailty Marine and I too have nothing but good things to say. Great service, care and experience.

well ... what do you think is the Issue ?

fish die due to many reasons mainly : bad water, bad nutrition, disease, old age ....

you state your water is good, if it wasnt all other fish would also die.

you state all other fish are disease free .... so if the QM fish brough in disease, your other fish should catch it too ? did u QT it ?

you state they were eating [which is nice as I have to train all my fish I get] so nutrition can probably be scratched out too ... what kind of fish though ? and what were u feeding them ?

so this leaves old fish ... what kind of fish were they ? how large ?

not doubting you or anything, just dont understand how it could be :) trying to figure it out.

Well the fish I bought were Anthias, Diamond and Bi-color Gobi, Blue Chromus Damsels, Peppermint shrimp, 6-line wrasse. Not all at once but over a period of 6 months.

Fish in there before were 2 clowns (Ocellaris pair) Cleaner Shrimp, assorted corals, crabs, snails assorted as well.

Water tested normal all parameters
Food has been a mixture of Reef Chili, Rods, and Mysis Shrimp
Water changes once a month to bi-weekly.
40 gallon breeder with 15 gallon sump, rock fuge, skimmer, etc...

All in good shape. Some HA but nothing to be concerned about.

The clownfish are not big, juvenile when I got them. Pretty peaceful. Had a pseudo chromus but removed the fish due to aggression.

Maybe the LFS buys dry goods from them I don;t know for sure..Just odd.
Checked fish when dead and nothing to indicate diseases or markings, spots, etc....

Well at least I am getting somewhere...maybe his system has some flaws in it causing stress? I know that the fish are usually gone the day after he gets an order in, I never really seen much sit in his tanks for weeks or ever hear him say you have to wait a few days. I guess if he is getting them from Quality Marine and they are that good, then maybe he feels the fish can go the same or next day after acclimating.

For one, I did buy some fish the day after or a few days after the order was shipped in so that could also be a possibility.

Ok, any other ideas?

I agree with the above posts. Quality Marine has the best reputation in this hobby.

Have you ever doubted that maybe your LFS does not actually get their fish from Quality Marine? Although, even if that's the case, having all 15 fish die is a rare circumstance.

What symptoms did the fish show when they died? Fish don't die for no reason.

Basically, I have not seen any indication of stress or disease. The last 2 fish I lost were this past Monday.

Monday they were fed and ate quite well and by Tuesday they were both gone. Nothing that showed me something was wrong beforehand.

Yes, the LFS could be "saying" they buy fish from Quality Marine but until I see proof, I was taking their word.

I have bought corals from the same LFS and had no issues at all..

I find the condition of fish from QM is usually excellent.

You didnt mention anything about a QT tank. I would highly suggest QT new fish for a solid 3-4 weeks.

Also, check the salinity of the LFS. Its possible theres might be real low. I've seen as low as 1.015 before from the LFS. The drastic change in salinity could be stressing the fish out.

Quality marine is well regarded. My best guess would be salinity differences. But what invertebrates do you have in that tank?

I had peppermint shrimps and cleaner shrimps all perished from the LFS within 1 month to 2.

Right now, I have turbos, nerite snails, a few blue hermits and one cleaner, all doing well. I do have a red star fish and smaller white ones which are yet to be identified but all well.

One thing I did before the last death...was do a water change. My RODI system was down due to replacing filters and resin, so I went to the same LFS to get their mixture of RODI salt water. At the time I never questioned or checked his levels only becasue I went on his word of how well his water is excellent and the salt he uses is the best...could be that I had too much confidence in this store. Still though I would not think his salt mixture would be off.

If your store is buying from quality marine ask if you can take a picture of the 2D card that each fish ships with. This will allow you to lookup, when, where, how on the exact fish or group of fish.

Quality Marine, is an excellent wholesaler!

What do you use to measure and test your water? I would NEVER add salt water to my tank without checking the salinity @ a temp of 78.

I would never blame a LFS for 15 dead purchases unless the LFS was putting them in my tank and caring for it. He can't take responsibility for what happens to the animals after they leave his store.
