Quarantine a Blue Hippo?

Normally, I would think "of course." He's an ich magnet.

But.....these are my thoughts. He's already traveled from the sea, distributer, local distributer, and finally arrived at the LFS and has been there for a week.
Putting him in quarantine then the display seems like just another adjustment.

No ich after a week at the LFS, likely to get in now? I don't know?

My quarantine is only 30g? That seems stressful for a medium sized tang.

The only fish that may harass him in the display is a medium majestic angel and possibly a medium potters angel.

I'm more than willing to setup the quarantine, I'm in no rush. Just want to do what's in the best interest of the fish.

Thanks,

I would QT it, and I have QT'd my own hippo for 6 wks with hyposalinity. He's been in my display for 2 yrs now. I'm on the "must QT everything" side of the fence.

I have read somewhere that most of the LFS does slightly medicate their tanks. So you might not see the ich on the fish but they often do carry it. I am a firm believer that every fish from the LFS has a equal chance of having ich. I always look for symptoms from fish that's in their tanks and if one fish is sick, most likely every fish in the same system is infected (all the tanks are connected right?)

I just bought 4 anthias from the LFS and they all looked great, eating healthy. Today is day 5 and there is an outbreak of ich, I'm glad that I QT'ed them.

"the best interest of the fish" needs to include your current tank residents. I have QT'd each and every fish in my tank for 6 full weeks and have never had a problem. The six weeks does not include any time with health issues. It would not be fair to the other fish to expose them to potential parasites. Nothing takes the fun out of this hobby faster than a sick display tank. Good luck with the new tang.

Good choice. To hasten the cycle, I use water from my display to start the QT, and drop in a piece of shrimp . I don't like to use a fish to cycle the tank, since it adds one more unknown to the mix.

I keep a Marineland Powerfilter running on my sump just to use for QT when needed.

Then do a water change on the display and use the waste water for the QT. It works well.
