Quarantine procedure question

If you put a new fish in quarantine, do you immediately treat it with medication even if it has no symptoms, or do you just observe and feed it?

Seems from the threads some people medicate it right off the bat.:uhoh3:

Thanks much

My personal preference is to put all new fish though the Tank Transfer Method and treat with PraziPro on the 2nd and 4th transfers followed by 4 weeks of quarantine. Outside of using PraziPro, which treats internal as well as external parasites, I don't like to use any medications unless there is a clear indication that treatment is necessary.

+1 above

Fresh water dips for flukes. note:Can be hard on some fish so I use Prazi instead. At 78.8F and 35 salinity, you dip for 3 to 5 min in fresh water on day 1 of treatment. Then in 7 days you repeat. Their calculator changes times based on temp and salinity. Taken from http://www.marineparasites.com

From other sources I read Prazi works on flukes upon contact. So I think 24 hours should be more than enough time. However, on fish with very thick slime coats, it may not fully penetrate the coating. Thus allowing some flukes to persist.

In conclusion TTM with (Prazi - 7 days apart) should be enough. Unless you see something else

Every new fsh goes through TTM with Prazi on the second and fourth transfer, followed by 3 weeks of observation. Nothing else unless a symptom is identified.

Formalin dip new arrivals and into QT. Until the fish is eating with gusto I don't treat with meds. After fish is eating well. I use Chloroquine Phosphate for 28 days and the a round of Clout before formalin dipping again before the fish goes into the DT

Formalin dip upon arrival, then into TTM process (w/ Prazi-Pro), then into quarantine tank with a round of CP, and then into the observation tank for 2-3 weeks without any meds.

This is what I do as well. Except recently I do two rounds of formalin baths 5-7 days apart. I also Always make sure the fish is eating well before treating with any meds.

I usually treat the fish with prazi only unless there is clear signs of other illnesses. It also depends on the fish as some species are more sensitive to meds and could stress them, leading to more problems.
