Hi, I want to purchase some fish but I want to quarantine them first. I have a ten gallon tank, hob filter and heater. Do I have to cycle the tank? Can I just keep doing water changes?
do you have a DT that is cycled? If yes, take a liverock or sand to seed the tank. If no, get a bottle of Bio Spire (sp?). Give that a few days to cycle then your QT tank will be ready.
You can keep up on water changes and the HoB filter will eventually cycle (though it wont matter if you have to dose antibiotics). I keep some sponge/filter floss in my sump so I can set up a filter for QT quickly as needed.
If I use bio spira how long will bacteria live in a bare bottom tank without no rock just pvc pipe for fish to hide? Do I have to put fish in it right away to keep bacteria living?

QT using Bio Spira: you will need a filter, salt water, heater, and thermometer. You do not have to put fish in right away. If the fish that are placed in the QT are ill, then you will need to treat it with med. You will remove the carbon/bio pad or you can remove the filter. If you remove the filter then add an air stone to the QT.
Once again, you do not need to cycle the tank as mentioned above. I have gone 2 months with one, no filter. Just an airstone and heater and some Prime. Change the water about every 2-3 days.
