Quarentining

I have been reading around and have decided to set up a quarentine tank. I have everything that is needed(tank, filter, heater, powerhead, and pvc piping). I understand how to set everything up but i am a little confused on the water part. From what i have read some people are saying add water from your main tank and others are saying add newly mixed water. Which should i add, new water or the main tank water?

Thanks,

When I have used a qt, I have tended to do it bare of all ornament and sand and rock, except where a fish needs to hide for its comfort. I put one rock in, for that. I keep the tank empty and ready, with its equipment.

If you are needing to take an injured fish from your display tank to qt, take tank water with him so he will not have the stress of a water change---unless you suspect the quality of your water is the source of the problem, of course.

If you are qt'ing a fish you have just brought in from the store, do not use the water he came in: discard all of that under any circumstances, after you have prepared new salt water AND drip acclimated him in his bag. You could equally well use water from your tank, [but it will carry chemical 'messages' from your inhabitants.] And it is probably quicker to prepare new water: it has to be made up somewhere, if you have filled an entire tank with it, so it might as well be new water. It's not much difference for the fish.

So i should put in new water??

If i put in new water how long will i have to wait till my parameters are where they should be?

Please donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t think im trying to bash anyoneââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s way of doing any thing, but you have to be careful about putting rocks in the QT tank because it can give the ICK parasite a place to attach and keep it life cycle going. And you want to be sure that the tank has a specific gravity of 1.009. So the ICK parasite can not reproduce. After all the QT tank is a place to get rid of the parasites that come with the new fish and to watch for any other elements to keep them out of your marine tank, and insure the heath of your other tank friends. Oh and the PVC pipe is a good idea.
Here are some good links on QT.

New water can be ready in a few hours...at need, if you start with ro/di water and have a salt meter. If you are not using ro/di, I do advise it: it will save you all sorts of trouble with your tank. Few water sources are pure enough without that filtration.

And Meco is quite right about the rock...it is problematic. For qt to allow an injured fish to recover in quiet, yes, I have provided a rock. If medicating for ich, no rock.

I like to use main tank water in a hospital or quarantine tank. It provides some biological seed to the tank. I often just remove water form those tanks and refill them with water change water from the display. See An Ounce of Prevention for the full story.
