Question about Durso Overflow

Hi. I'm looking at a tank that has a Durso style overflow. Quick question....does it matter if the drain end that goes to the sump is below the water or does it have to stay above the water line for it to work properly? I'm especially concerned about it restarting after a power failure. Thanks.

Either. I find that it will make less noise if it goes an inch or two below the water line, but I add a "T" fitting near the end so that the leg of the T is just above the water level in the sump. This allows the air in the drain line to escape thereby minimizing bubbles.

FWIW - the drain line has absolutely nothing to do with the ability of the drain restarting after the power goes out. The design of a Durso is such that the drain will automatically start as the return pump fills the DT and the level in the overflow box rises.

Billdogg, Thanks. I was pretty sure it didn't matter if it was below the water line. Just wanted to confirm that. I like the idea with the tee to allow air to escape.
