Question About Frogfish care?

Hello new to the forum. I just wanted to ask a couple questions if anyone can answer them. I just got a really nice 1 inch frog fish. Cream color with red. I have a 14 gallon newer model bio cube setup. 17lbs of lr and just a frogspawn and some Xenia and some macro algae. He will be going in a bigger tank in a few months and seems mini for even 14g with being only 1 inch. My main question is current for the frog fish. The main output is really really low flow cause i am using a 200ghp pump threw the chiller so not getting much flow at all out of that. My other power head is a bio cube power head 280gph. The flow is pretty decent in the tank. Is this going to bother him? I have only had him for 3 days and he is eating a few ghost shrimp with no issues and seems really happy. Just don't want to stress him. From what i read the first week is harsh on them. I have UV and middle chamber a refug. Skimmer isn't in atm cause of the chiller hoses. But should be back in around 2 months from now. I will post some pics tomorrow of the little guy. Any info on the current or any other info would be a great help since there isn't much info out there.

The flow shouldnt hurt him. I have mine in a 29g with a tunze 6025 and he is fine.

The skimmer...if you are doing regular water changes then this should be a moot point. Smaller protein skimmers arent all that efficient (though the do help) and changing your water will do more than it can anyway. I would suggest doing them after you feed, whoch should be like once a week depending on the food...smaller foods like ghost shrimp you can feed more often. Larger foods DON'T feed often...if the food is too large it will rot before it gets digested...which will kill your frog.

If you are having a hard time getting him to eat, start with ghpst shrimp, or mollies that you have acclimated to sw. Most are kept in fw, so when put in sw, the parasites present can't handle the osmotic shock...mollies are pretty robust in sw. I would suggest getting it eating frozen soon. And do vary the diet. Look up "thiaminase" on google and it will describe what happens if food is not varied.

Sounds great and thank you for the really good info. I read around that getting your frog fish on a frozen food diet is not recommended. In fact don't expect to have your frog fish for over a year type deal cause it is not getting the right nutrients? Since it is the first week i am doing the ghost shrimp and he is doing fine. Might do the mollies next if i can find some small ones. I will post a nice pic when i get home tonight!!! Again thanks so much for the amazing info!!

I'm not quite sure where "around" is, but weaning your angler is a much better idea than not weaning it. Feeding the same food repeatedly is going to result in malnutrition, and feeding the wrong foods is even worse.

I also don't know who the heck said that anglers barely live a year...I think lots of folks perpetuate bad info on the forums, which is why it's so hard to get the right info from peeps who have actually kept the critter in question, but I digress.

Anglers have VERY slow metabolisms, and one of the biggest mistakes people make is to overfeed them, be it too often, or too large a meal. Too much food in an angler's GI tract can actually begin to decompose before it's digested, resulting in bloating and death for the angler. Anglers are best fed 2x a week for adults, and for juvies, you can add another feeding. Food items should be no larger than the distance between their eyes.

Anglers are also known to die from a mysterious malady known as Sudden Angler Death (SAD), where a seemingly healthy fish darts around the tank, bloats, floats, and dies. This isn't well understood, even by very sharp angler keepers, but it's very real.

In a nutshell, Thiaminase is an enzyme that inhibits the fish's ability to process Thiamine, which results in CNS disorders, and presents as cessation of feeding (anorexia), clamped fins, convulsions, and ultimately death. It is contained in the flesh of many fish, but feeder goldfish and rosy reds are two of the worst things you can feed to a SW predator.

Live ghosties and guppies are about the best you can do for a 1" fish, which BTW, is going to be tuff to feed, esp if you haven't target fed many preds. I recommend using a "stealth stick" when you start weaning the fish (see article below).

Wow amazing forum. Good to hear from people that know what there talking about. And yes the other forums i read about the 1 year life span and not feeding fresh water fish where fishy sites imo. But wow this should get s sticky for frogfish post heh. Best info and ALL the info i was wanting and needed.
I already got him feeding ghost shrimp without a issue just dangle the live shrimp via it's tail in front of him and he took a few seconds and he grabbed it. Tonight i will feed him some more since it has been a few days. Then i will keep him on ghost shrimp guppie's diet. At what point do you think i should mix frozen in his diet maybe a month or two down the road? And what kind silversides? Sorry for so many questions just really good knowledge coming from people that actually know what there talking about. I just want to give my little guy the best care i can!! I love the little bugger!

If you arent use to presenting the food, go for the smallest possible so it retains the "fish" look. I cut larger pieces while frozen and feed him that.

Keep in mind too, if you are feeding frozen foods, and it thaws, it can spoil really quickly and do the same as described above. So make sure it has never thawed and get it home quickly!

Also, do gut load any feeders before feeding to maximize the nuitrition the frog is getting!
