Question about keeping Rose bubble tip

Before I buy one of these I need more info. I've heard they are the "safest" anemones to keep with other corals, but when I read about them, they are considered "semi-aggressive". If I have a nice spot where it can put it's foot in a hole in a rock, near light and a moderate flow (whatever moderate means) could I safely keep one? What would I need to do, if anything with my powerheads? I do have a top over my flowbox, but it doesn't fit on real tight, but stays on pretty tight because of the glass top that lays on it.

I really want an anemone, but don't want one to kill my whole tank.

Thanks!

There's no guarantee that the anemone will stay where you put it. It will likely wander around until it find a spot it likes.

ANY anemone can move around, but, a would say that BTAs are the most likely to move. Typically, SPS and BTAs can be a potentially bad combo, especially if you have higher end SPS. My BTAs (about 15 of them) don't move around at all - but I asked them nicely to stay in one place! Then again, I don't have any SPS in my tank either so not a huge deal. Do you homework on which nem will best fit your system (if any) and go from there! HTH

Thanks. I like that you ask nicely, I can do that :D Well, I heard a RBTA doesn't have much of a sting. Hmmm. What are high end SPS? Do you just mean that you won't be upset if they die, because they were cheap? I really don't want anything to die. That's just me. I have a green star polyp thing, a birds nest, a toadstool leather (is that an SPS?) and other leathers, like a monti cap. I'm bad at remembering names.

SPS = Small Polyp Stony - hard, calcareous skeleton (Acropora, Montipora, Seriatopora, etc) - your monti cap and birdsnest are SPS. Your toadstool is a leather - no hard skeleton.

I'm planning a RBTA for my 125 and I'm a little nervous about potential wandering, but I figure I'll take it one day at a time, minimize the risk how ever I can, and just enjoy it the rest of the time. If you look around RC and elsewhere you'll see folks with SPS heavy tanks that are absolutely beautiful and there is an RBTA in there and it seems crazy, but it shows it can be done!

Good to know. I'm still doing my research. I'll let you know how it goes if I get one.

From my recent experience with an RBTA they move around until they find a place they like with a balance of flow and lighting. I places mine were I wanted it to be and by the next day it had moved clear across the tank. It kept moving for the next 3 days or so (just a few inches though) and now it hasn't moved in 4 weeks and it looks awesome and has grown nicely.

My bubble tips always wanted to travel to midway up in the tank and like everyone else said, put its foot into a good sized crevice in a rock. When it split, it stayed put and the clone moved to the complete other side of the tank and blew around for awhile until it found its own crevice. Just watch out for wandering nems and pumps. They are magnets for powerheads. You can sort of get one to move in the direction you want by aiming a powerhead in their vicinity and angling it until they get annoyed and move on. But if you they feel too disturbed, they may ball up and float around for awhile. Otherwise they are relatively easy to keep - that being said, I had no SPS at the time.

Well. . . thanks all. Such contradicting stuff I learn. Heard about what people call "success" by them splitting, and someone else says it means they are not happy, and are cloning due to feeling they are at risk. Also, have seen some that seem to love being "blown around" by a powerhead. I guess I'll get mine next week, and see how it goes. I'm a bit worried about powerheads. How about I turn them off when I'm not watching/checking the tank, like at night or when I'm at work the next day??? Just until I'm sure it's settled. I still have an overflow box, with a return pump, pumping in water.

He's in my tank, and has a foot in a nice crevice. Looking good, and happy to have bought it! Not the best pic - taken with my iphone
