question about ocellaris

ok, everyone is safe and sound so far in the qt tank. i put a piece of pvc in the bottom for my basslet. they are just kinda hangin out.

Good thinking with the PVC, they'll really appreciate the cover. I created a little jungle gym out of 6 8" sections of 1.5" PVC (left over from my sump plumbing) and some epoxy. I put two pipes on the bottom this way:

I I

Then laid three on top of those, one at each end, this way:

----
----
----
And one final pipe on top this way:

I

So the entire structure looks like this from the side:

. . O
=====
O......O

(excuse the dots, that's just so the spacing came out right)

And like this from the other side:

=====
O O O
=====

The pipes are just attached to one another with blobs of epoxy - not pretty, but it does the trick and it's lasted a long time and shows no sign of coming apart.

The fish absolutely love it. I QT everything in hypo for six weeks, and I've noticed that fish in the QT seem much more relaxed with this structure in the tank than they did with the other bits of pipe I used to place on the bottom before I had the 'gym' - I think it's the levels, and how many holes there are. It's like having a large piece of rock in the tank - several fish can hide at the same time, either inside or between the pipes, so there's no competition for shelter. It's also easy to sterilize, I just bleach it along with the tank and filter when I'm done using the QT.

I wish you the best of luck with your clowns. I recently babysat four clowns for a friend, and two ended up dying of the same symptoms you're describing. They looked a little down and out when they arrived, and within days they had stopped eating, started breathing rapidly, and nothing we did worked. We tried prazi-pro, metronidazole, fed them with garlic (while they were still eating) but unfortunately, for us it was too late. I hope you can save yours, fingers crossed.

my basslet is the only one who really goes for the pipe. My clowns never tried to hide. My angel one sometimes but he seems to be pretty calm. I checked them this morning. They seem to be a little more calm as far as they are not staying in the same place doing the shimmy as they were before. Still show no interest in eating at all. Worst little clown is going to top every once in a while and sucking air. I hope its not too late for him.
Thanks for all your help again. My bf thinks i am crazy and asked me why didn't you just leave them in the main tank and see what happens. That's typical of men i guess. Although he has too little yorkshire terriors and my word you would think they are human to him. I did ich treatment and a couple of hours later i noticed the smaller clown with some thin white fecies. I did a treatment of prazipro for that. I guess i will see what happens.............but hey at least i am trying. I put the qt tank upstairs in an unused bedroom so that it is very quite for them. and get this........ my daughter made 2 signs for the bedroom door................one on outside says...............do not disturb............inside one says.......get well soon.
thanks again for everything. By the way my real name is Sue and I live in york, pa with my bf. I am 48 years old have two boys and a girl and a 21 month old grandson. I know that's irrelevant but sometimes it's nice to get a pic in your mind of who you are helping out. I see xxx you are from VA. We are neighbors. But within the next 4 or 5 years we will be retiring and moving to NC. Thanks again...................i will keep you posted.

one more quick question then i will stop i promise. lol
Should i do water changes while the treatment is going on or wait until after.

Watch the ammonia and if it gets to be too high or the fish show signs of serious stress, do a water change. The questions do not bother me at all. I am glad I could help.

By the way, I am Erin. I am only 22 and have a 3 year old daughter and am a Navy wife :)

Well Erin it is a pleasure to talk to you and have someone as knowledgeable as yourself to help a beginner like me. ahh a three year old. I remember those days. Now reliving it with my grandson...................only its alot different now.

LOL, I am glad to help. Yes, soon to be four going on 40. At least she has good manners, haha. Most kids I meet these days that are her age, well let's just say I was shocked at what the parents let them get away with.

One day I will be a grandmother I guess. Lord help me!

Anywho, I would love to be updated with your progress. I have a fish in quarantine right now myself.

you can e-mail directly at sls0768@yahoo.com
you said you got a new fish the other nite. What did you get? \
I will try to get you some more pics of my tank. It looks much better now with all the rock. I have a starfish in there. He is pretty cool. Only time he hangs on the side at the top is when he wants something good to eat. I usually give him scallop.
I know what you mean by kids these days. Although i always felt good when people would tell me that my children were well behaved. I guess i did something right...........even if i did raise them for the majority of the time as a single mom.
My little grandson is my world. His name is Elijah

I will save your email and drop you a line this afternoon.

I started a thread about the fish I recieved in this forum labeled bought a new beauty I do believe. She is a Tomato clown from the Solomon islands. I have fallen in love with her looks :)

update..................we left for a couple of hours this evening and came back to my yellow angel like it's covered in black dust. My basslet is really stressed. He tried to jump out of the tank. The clowns are still breathing hard and nobody is eating anything.

Well it happened. The original clown is gone. It's a sad day. My basslet is really acting strange. Almost like seizures or something.
Yellow angel still looks like it is dirty and seems to be breathing rapidly now too. help what am i doing wrong

You may be doing nothing wrong at all. It may have just been too late to treat.

My new clown has brook so I know how upsetting this is. She was an expensive fish. I am off to the store again to get formalin.

I would not buy any fish for a while if I were you. If any make it through this quarantine, you need to make sure to quarantine any fish you add at a later date for 8 weeks.
