Question for Atticus or another experienced clownfish breeder

It was break even at best. That was without taking a salary for myself. I had 9 spawning pairs when I sold off my broodstock. 2 pairs of black O's, 3 pairs of Orange O's, pair of Clarks, Pair of Maroons, Mixed pair of O's (black and orange), pair of black saddle backs (nesting never spawning), pair of tomatoes, and then I had Bangaii also.

It just takes so much time and I was not at a point where I could devote the necissary time to make it a profitable business. I only raised enough clowns to pay the bills each month.

WOW great pair of picassos! I didn't realize they developed that much black in them. They are much nicer than about 95% of others pics I have seen. I've always wanted a pair, but you are right, the price scares you off when they don't look as nice young.

Just curious, are you feeding blackworms or anything that you feel has helped them spawn?

The only thing I have done lately is neglect their tank a little. Nothing much has gone in or out of it lately, including my hands or the siphon.

You can't really tell from the pictures but they are about as wide as they are long. They are absolute pigs who are benefiting from frequent feedings of my other tanks. It could just be coincidence, but I did start feeding Rod's Food to them not that long ago...

Timing of the spawn and the addition of Rod's food is coincidence, but the quality of the spawn can be linked to Rod's food.

The key to getting clowns to spawn is consitency. By "neglecting" your tank you actually fostered a feeling of safety and routine that allowed the clowns to feel comfortable enough to spawn.

Long story short, clowns need this to spawn:

Lighting on a timer with the on cycle around 13 hours

Regular feeding schedule with at least one feeding a day being heavy

Quality food

Stability of water parameters

Don't move anything a clown can see inside or outside of the tank

That's about it. There are all kinds of other theories, but that has worked time and again for me. As an example I got a previously spawning pair of clowns from a club member, they were spawning like clockwork when he got them. After moving them to his tank they did not spawn for over a year. I traded for them and 2 months later I have eggs. Consistency and quality are key.
