Question for everyone...

Hello everyone. I would just like to say thanks for all the help I have gotten in this Forum. I almost have a ten gallon set up for a small mantis shrimp. Here is the thing though. I am moving. So I really do not want to complete my set up till I move. I have a 29 gallon glass reef set up. Nothing in there really. The only thing besides snails and crabs is an algea blenny and a six line wrasse. So where is what I was thinking. Why not invest in getting a 20 gallon long acrlic tank and just get rid of my two fish. Then make that into a mantis tank. That way I could house a larger species of Mantis Shrimp. Then keep the ten gallon for a smaller species. Here is the problem. The equipment that I have now. I have a remora skimmer, which I will keep for the mantis tank. I have a hand on refugium, which I will use for something else down the road. I have two maxi-jet powers heads with a wave maker, I do not think I need that. So I will use it for something else down the line. I have a overflow, which I will use for something else as well. The only problem is lighting. My lighting is:

150-175 watt 10000K Metal Halide HQI (with UV protection)
Two 65 watt compact attinics
Fan system

I know, I cannot remember what the wattage was on my metal halide. I am pretty sure it is only a 150. I am just wondering if that is over kill for a mantis shrimp and for a 20 gallon long acyric tank. What do you guys think? Also, what type of filtration beside the protein skimmer should I use? I was thinking just an aquaclear 500. I am also going to buy some kind of lunar LED light for the tank. Since mantis shrimp are nocternal. Well, what does everyone think? Also, who sells the larger species of mantis shrimp? What kind does everyone suggest I get? Thanks for everyone's help.

PS If you need anymore info to help me out please just ask.

If my info is wrong someone will correct me, I'm still pretty new at this and I can't help you with the different types of species but from what I have read you really do not need any special lighting for your mantis. I have also heard that it is not wise to house two mantis together. With a tank that small a protien skimmer is not required if you do water changes. I house my mantis in a 25T, which is my reef system also. I also have a clown fish in there and they do not bother each other. I can honestly say that the mantis does not bother my snails either but they are bigger then him. My mantis is a N. Wennerae and about 2 inches long. I'd say the AC500 would work fine in a 20g and you could turn it into a fuge once you get the LR established if you plan on having alot in the tank. I too am planning on making a 20L in the near future so I can get the mantis his own house. I think your on the right track and if you want to keep corals or other inverts with your new set-up your lights will great and I sense a mantis/small frag grow out tank :) Hope I've halped out some good luck and I hope to see some pictures of your new project.

lets me see i always like N.wenns that can go in a 5.5 or 10gal glass tank but if u have a acrylic i say a peacock is the best. But thats just my 2 cents.

I was thinking towards getting a peacok mantis shrimp. You think the tank will be big enough? I would only use the metal halide lighting that I have, because I have it already. I am just wondering if it will be too much light. Also, if I a refugium is better then an aquaclear 500, I already have a 19" hang on one. Anyways, thanks for the help so far guys. If anyone has anything to add please do so.

PS LiveAquaria.com does still sell Peacock Mantis Shrimp, how are they?

How do...

How do...

Is fishsupply that good? I am only worried that the mantis shrimp will not come out if the light is too much. I thought they were nocturnal.

So...

So...

So do you think the hang on refugium is better then an aquaclear 500 for filtration? I thought the aquaclear would be better. What does everyone think?

Here is what...

Here is what...

Here is what I have decided on:

30 Gallon Acrylic Tank 36x12x16
AquaClear 500
AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer with Maxijet 1200
CPR AquaFuge Han-On Refugium 19.25x4.5x12
65K 18 watt JBJ Eco-Light (for refugium)
Coralife 36" Lunar Aqualight
200 Watt Titanium Submersible Heater
Coralife Battery Operated Digital Thermometer
Two Maxi-Jet 600 Power Heads
One Mini-Jet 404 Power Head
Natural Wave Timer Wave Maker

I think that is it. What does everyone think? Maybe I am totally wrong. I would like to get everyone's opinion. Thanks for everone's help.

great thats ture about online stuff so try a lfs cuz mine are 75.00 but i found a hole in the wall place with the best fish in town and for only 25.00

sounds like a setup any mantis would be pretty happy in. just make sure the rockwork has a hiding place or get a pvc in there.

if you are going to get rid of your two fish, why dont you use the 29 for the mantis tank?? did i miss a reason for this??
