question for (home) builders

I was cleaning the new aquarium in the new house. Somehow, (by accident), my cleaning magnet jumped onto the wall (of all things!) and it stuck!
So I moved the magnet up and down the wall and it stuck. Metal studs below the sheetrock? I don't think so- there are certain areas that the magnet sticks and they aren't spaced like studs. One spot has like a rectangular metal plate beneath it. What the heck is back there... ?

HVAC ducks..Or tension cables.

I seem to recall there being the duct that run upstairs behid your aqaurium. Infact i remeber John and I talking about that worring if they would be in the way of the tank...Then we discoverd they went upstairs

Probably not likely in your house but I have seen tension cables and guy lines to help support large walls with a lot of windows in them.

I'm more curious how the magnet "jumped" onto the wall...

As far as it sticking... HVAC duct work seems very likely.

fit of anger! Just kidding. One end of the aquarium is 6" from the wall... and it's a very strong magnet.

Could also be where wiring or plumbing is running through your wall. We put plates there so no nails or drywall screws can penetrate the wiring or plumbing!

Not in NY...No plates here..We used them in FL but here anything goes...If I said what I know nobody would buy a new house. Or atleast they would only buy from a certain builder.

That ought to attract your mother and law's attention.... As well as any unsuspecting house guest.....BTW did you get you tank..."installed" yet:D

Looks very kewl to hang my magnet on the wall.
(At least the kids and I think so! :D )
LOL you have entirely too much time on your hands Gary!!! lol

could very well be aluminum wall studs. They have become alot more common as time goes on. They are not usually used on supporting walls ( outside perimiter etc. ) but it could be. also depending on if you have blown in insulation or roll up insulation could be a aluminum lining on that..

I didnt know that aluminum was magnetic! even the "T"series of aluminum.

learn something new every day!
