Question For Those With Multifloor Setups

My tank is going to go up against the front wall of my living room right over my garage. I would like to have the water changing tanks, and possibly the sump in the garage blow the tank. My question for those that have done this is do you run the plumbing through the walls or directly through the floor.

It seems to me that it would be much easier going through the floor, but I am a little hesitant to drill through my nice hardwood floors as it would mean the tank needs to be there permanently. But I'm not sure how I would run plumbing between floors in the wall- I think that would require drilling through a significant amount of wood.

Thanks for any help.

Either way it will be some decent work.

Do you have any of the wood flooring left over? If so you could always replace the damaged boards at a later date if you ever decided to move the tank.

Seems easier to go straight down and will provide you with less head loss due to 90 degree angles when you feed the water back up from the garage below.

No extra flooring, but my flooring is pretty standard in size and color. I suppose I could always get a replacement board, if needed. Good point about the head loss.

Yea I think through the floor would be my route.... easier for plumbing and all.

Good luck, sounds like a fun project.

i lucked out and had an air vent located next to the tank. i cut out some of the vent box (it was a floor mounted one) and ran my plumbing through that. i made them all temp hookups so i could hide them with the vent back in place.

i didn't get the remote sump i wanted, but it saved me having to drill through the floor and makes water changes a breeze.

You could cut a neat hatch into the floor that can be removed to let pipes through and if you move just replace hatch. Will look like an access door. Also if you move tank you could always leave a side board on top of access hatch.

My friend made a rectangular cut the size of a floor vent for heating, easier to thread piping & can cover with the grate if needed after.
