question on 9020

I just got my 9020 today, I have a question regarding the back of the unit, it has 2 holes in the back for the water to shoot out. Is it the design? or is it suppose to be plug with one of the screws?
And the ozone goes to the big nipple in the front? or the little one on the back side?

I installed it already. I think it is still breaking in. But I like it so far, since there is 2 pumps, I inject ozone to one of them. Will see the differece. but so far I like it, noise wise. the air intake is making some noise, but for my set up, I don't really care since I have it in my family room.

I have seen the g-3 in action it worked well but its big I think this skimmer should pull circles around it

I also have a new 9020 and I love it. Super quiet, compact size, easy to clean and it skims like crazy. I used to have a large euro-reef which was fine but I like the 9020 a lot better. Plus Roger is a great resource if you have questions.

I would like to know where you should set the bubble level at.In the middle of the fraction cup or lower,higher.I am not sure.I didn't run the unit in vinegar and water to break it in.I wanted to let it run normal.I rinsed it in luke warm water.I don't use ozone so I can't break it in that way.I am looking for a dryer skimmate not to wet but that nice nasty stinky stuff.thanks.

Steve, I have never done it that way, I just plug them in with the venturi open 3 full turns and after 5-7 days open/close the venturi 1/4-1/2 turn every day until I get the type of skimmate I want. I really find it hard to jusge by the position of the bubbles in the cup as that will vary with surface tension and skimmable compunds present.

yes I see that it does vary as it lowered and then raise but because I couldn't fit that bucket in my stand(its big) I was worried about a flood going on.I saw a bit of foam in one of the skimmers but not enough to get high enough to empty out.I am using 2x3 litre containers for the skimmate.I use to use a 2 litre coke bottle with my old skimmer.I can see about 3 threads on the valves (left it at that adjustment) I don't want to come home one day to discover a wet carpet.I set the buble level at a little less than half at the fraction cup.Its hard to judge once the skimmer breaks in I guess I will see better.The 90 degree was in my way so I used 2 hoses.They are a bit small but I got home at around 9pm so home depot was closed.By the time I installed the skimmer and fiddled with it it was 12 am I didn't get to bed till around 2 am.I have 1 inch pipe that I can use for the nog but I didn't have 2 couplings.I can use that aswell.I think the hose will be cheaper.

I wouldn't overly restrict the outlet, remember a fairly large volume of air has to escape, as well as the skimmate. I would try to find something larger volumetrically that can fit in a small space. If you can put the hose to nearly the bottom of a deep container as the skimmate fills it will plug the hose and cause the air pressure to press down the foam column and stop skimming, preventing any possible overflow.

Yes thats what I thought.I am going to buy a hose that fits over a 1 inch pipe.I could go with a 1 inch to 1 1/4 coupling and thus be able to use larger hose.I see the tunze hose is as large as a 1 inch fitting(outside diameter) so I could do that.I can also use a coupling and use a hose to fit over the coupling.This will be as wide as the hose the unit came with.Do you think 2x 3 litre container is to small?I will cut off a piece of the hose to try and get same size or larger.

Roger I was stupid(or tired) and forgot or didn't think to use 2x 1" tees with caps that I had lying around.I used that and fitted your supplied hose with the 90 draining into my bins.I had to use 1" pipe on the 90 because it wasn't long enough to go into the jug.I only used a piece of pipe 4 inches long.Its enough for all the foam and nog.I could use a longer piece of pipe to go close to the bottom of the container as to not get any overflow happening but I didn't know if the 1" pipe is to restrictive so this way it has room to breath a good diameter and the only thing that may be restrictive is the 1 " pipe.I would imagine this would work fine.Do you think I have to replace that 1"pipe with a larger hose?I don't see it being that much of a restriction.

I think you could just use 1" pipe. Substituting a T for the elbow would completely defeat the ability to break the foam column when the cup is full. 3L is enough if you will be around but on a 2 week vacation it may not suffice.

Roger, I got my skimmer working now. And after reading the thread, I have a question. so if the waste water level touches the hose, then the skimmer will stop working? cause my drain hose is very close to the bottom of the container, should I cut it shorter?

But the tee is capped.Do you mean the tee off of the fractinator is going to give me a problem or you mean using a tee instead of a 90 will break the foam column.when the jug is full.I would think that the cup would fill and eventualy spill out of the tee don't you think.Or do you mean don't cap the tee once the cup fills up the tee will cause a back pressure and stop the flow.If then instead of capping the tee I would have to place a small piece of pipe instead of the cap something like 3 inches allowning the foam to flow but stopping the flow when the jug is full.Am I confuseing you? thanks Do I have to show you pics would that be better.I also have the water line about 3/4 " below the wave line on the skimmer.Should the level be lower?

It actually needs to build up a bit past the hose end to shut down the skimming but yes, I would try it out and see your result before cutting the hose. You will see the foam is pushed down by the air pressure when it hits the point.

Sorry, didn't see it was capped. What you want to happen is for the fluid to build up in the cup, block the air escaping the skimmer through the pipe and push the column down to stop skimming. You really just need to use the elbow and 1" pipe should be large enough. The wave line is the upper limit so it should be fine, are using it in tank style (no standpipes) or in sump style?

In sump thats why I am using the stand pipe but my water line is high its about 3/4 " below that line.The stand pipe ends about just blelow my water line.I already see foam production.I was using 2 tees and 2 caps because I had them.I didn't have any couplings.I can go buy some but what the point I have the fittings.I understand why the pipe has to be sealed so as the foam can travel.How much back pressure is needed to stop foam production.What happens if the bucket fills and you do get enough back pressure does this damage the skimmer in any way or does it have some type of relife valve.I would imagine the skimmer would still try to push the air and fluid out.This skimmer is very quiet in fact one of the most quiet I have ever had.I only hear a small hissing sound as if air is leaking but its faint.So far I am happy with itCan't wait to see some real nog.
