Question regarding preset-up cleaning.

Hello everyone this is my first post here. I am new to marine tanks, I have been keeping cichlids for roughly the past 15 years, and just decided i'm ready for a change.

I have been browsing these forums for the past few weeks now, I have to say great info! and Great group of people.

On to my question... I had a really bad bout of what i believe was cyanobacteria in my tank prior to shut down. What can i use on my tank to clean it and what would you guys recommend as a process to make sure it doesn't come or can it can back in my salt setup?

I have removed all the agronite i had in there and will be just getting rid of it as i don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

You can clean a tank with a bleach water solution. Like a cap full or less with a cup (Not a unit of measure) of water. wipe it out with a sponge and rinse. Once its dry start all over. Cyano happens to nearly all tanks at some point, we rid our tanks of it by adding flow and correcting nutrients.

Yeah pure bleach and water will clean it right up. If you see cyano in the first six months of your tank being setup, don't pay it any mind. New tanks will go through many different stages of algae so don't sweat it. After that time if its still hanging on you will want to look at nutrient reduction methods like a gfo reactor. Almost all algae is spawned from excess nutrients. Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

I used vinegar and water on mine.

You'll come to hate the red that comes at 1st, but then love the purple and green.

Funny you all say how common cyano is, no one around here could believe that i had it in a fresh water tank. They all said it was very rare to get even in salt water. guess i know where to come for all my info now :lol2:
