Question with Oregon Tort Color....

I recieve this frag of Oregon Tort from a friend about a year ago. It started as just a nub so it seems to be growing ok but I never got that deep rich color he had or that I've seen in so many other pics of this coral.

It sits in one of the brighter spots in my tank directly under a 250 watt Radium and VHO actinics. PAR is about 400-500. It was similar in color when I first started it under T5s in my frag tank. Thoughts? More light, less light, more flow?

ALK 8-9 DKH
Ca 400-425ppm
Mg 1350-1450ppm
NO3 undetectable
PO4 undetectable

Lol I'm from Oregon and that's where the coral was propagated, actually know the person who first sold it in the us.

 Well that would be the easiest explanation wouldn't it?

I have no reason to believe my buddy misrepresented the ID. It was a free frag anyway. He's usually pretty good about only dealing with reputable places and getting the correct lineage on stuff so I'll see where he got it.

I think its too early to tell, wait till It gets bigger. I dont see any green so it is a possibility. Is your other sps lightly colored? Id post a picture of your friends colony.

His tank is down at the moment as he's building a new house but I can see if he's got an older pic. From what I remember it looked like every picture of an Oregon Tort I've seen. Within about a month in my system it switched to this lighter color. I have a couple acros that are a little on the lighter side but overall I think my colors are pretty typical.

I highly doubt that is a Oregon tort. You know why they call it the Oregon tort? Because a guy who lived in Oregon made that corals a house hold name buy propagating it. There was no such thing as an Oregon tort before he put a frag in his display and it turned into a beautiful coral and started selling frags of it. Now we all know of its Beauty. That same guy happens to live very close to me and we talk often and I have seen some of the original colonies/frags from the original lineage. I could be wrong here and corals can morph but it haven't seen a morph like this.

Looks like an oregon tort corallite structure to me. Your tank is very nutrient starved and all your colors look very light. Time to get some more fish or feed the reef more. Possibly back off on gfo or carbon dosing? Your colors are NOT typical.

I've been running my tank fallow of fish for the past three months due to an outbreak of ick. So admittedly, I don't feed the tank much and the nutrients are likely on the low side. However, this coral looked like this even when I had a bunch of fish and even some pretty decent algae and cyano issues. I do use GFO but don't utilize carbon dosing. I've considered feeding the corals a little something to see what effect it has on the colors but haven’t as of yet.

Richard, you're the first person to ever point out that my tank looks nutrient starved. Would you mind pointing out a specific coral pic or two that leads you to believe this?

Thanks

Sure. You have a predominately tan color to your acros. Your acro nana or valida is tan with purple tips. All your acros are light. The orange digs are leaning towards hot pink. I've had these colors before, and I've seen it in many tank. Back off on the GFO and shorten your photoperiod for now. the colors will become more rich. You said the Oregon tort changed after 1 month of being in your system....

Hmm... Thanks for the advice but I'm not sure I'm totally with ya on this theory yet. I've had that nana for probably 6 years in two different tanks. Its pretty much looked the same since I bought it.

The digi is an ORA Peach Digitata so I think its supposed to be a tad pink but frankly I don't think it looks pink at all in person. However, the Army says I'm color blind though, so you could be right

I did find a pic of the "tort" from last February when the tank still had fish and it looks a little darker so you may be on to something...
