Question

Under powered lights? They (and most clams) usually croak before 6 months. It probably all depends on the situation, though. What is your situation?

I've seen that time and time again....that's why even though a few success stories pop up on here, I would never put a clam under anything but MH. I had a bad LFS when I lived in MH that would lose their clams every 6 months in their PC lit show tank despite everything else thriving....they just didn't get it!

Totally agree with you Peabody, since i went to MH I have yet to lose one single piece of coral, clam, anything. And its been over 7 months and i've added over 30 new pieces. MH may cost a lil more but in the long run, you'll save a bundle.

I just purchased a gigas (about 5 inches). I have 2x150w metal halides and 2 96 actinic on a 72 gal bow.Do you think this light would suffice?. his inhalant seems to be to wide right now Im afraid he may be a little too deep (on the sand).

I know the kind of store. I have seen stores where the clams are held under PC lighting. I never had the courage to ask the owners if the clam was sold or if it died. Recently a few stores have updated the lights and am now wondering if it is still enough.

Do you guys think that a Crosea clam can do well in what may be a 30 or 35 gal tank that is 24 inches tall with a single 14 or 20k 150W MH? The clams are located on the sandbed.

Tridacnea Crocea tend to like being placed in the rockwork better. They are one of the most light demanding clams and should be placed closer to the light. They are also known as "burrowing clams" because they release a substance that over time dissolves the rockwork around them and lets them burrow into the rockwork.

If you wish to try to keep croceas in the substrate, or any clam for that matter, you should bury a "plate" of rock or tile about 1/2" under the substrate for the clam to attach it's byssal threads to. Otherwise, the clam will be susceptible to predation through the byssal opening.

Do check out www.wetwebmedia.com and the articles on tridacnea clams. Especially the article by Barry Neigut of clamsdirect.com at http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/cav1i3/Clam_care/Clam_care.htm

Good luck!

I tried twice to keep croceas under PC lighting. Both times they looked good for a couple months then they slowly shriveled up.Now I have 3x250 DE MH and 4x 96w PC and my clams and corals love it!

Seamay, you're fine. But believe it or not, he could outgrow your tank VERY quickly (in as little as 2 years). There's a gigas pic inthe SPS forum that's wowing people now. He went from 7 to 24x18 inches inches in like 2 years!

Tyrosinase: I would put him high in the rockwork.
There is a method to the madness...in 2 years I may be able to convince my wife we (or I) need a bigger tank now..lol.
seriusly though what about the gapping inlet...I dont think this is normal...i mean its almost rounded. Ive only had him a couple of days...mabey its just stress.
