Questions about breeding clowns

I am going to go down a new path in the hobby of trying to breed my clowns, I have no intention of making it a big deal right now. About all I want is 1 or two pair of clowns that I breed for fun then sell the babies.

To start with Ill be using this thread to post questions I have along the way so that they arnt all scattered about.

Ill be attempting to have my bonded pair of Premium Picasso Clowns breed. No idea what one is male or female because they are about the same size one is slightly bigger I noticed when acclimating them but never paid attention to what one was what. They are both 3.5"-4''

Question #1: Am i better off leaving them in my 220g tank till they lay a batch of eggs then moving them to their own tank or would I be better off moving them into a 29g biocube dedicated only to them?

Question #2: What tips do you have to get them you know..."In the mood"

I think you will have better results if you move the clowns to a dedicated system. There you can raise the temperature, increase the feedings, and also increase the water temperature to simulate Spring time breeding conditions.

Ok talk to me more about the temp. I have read a lot of stuff on clowns but haven't seen anything about temp

good advice above I would also lower salinity a bit. temp about 80-81. put a 4" pot and a tile in there with them. lights on 10 hours day. feed very well. In other words, make them happy.

depends on where you are now. I would drop couple points from where you are . If at 1.025 go down to 1.023 slowley

I keep my FO clown setups at 1.019 and the temp at 82-84 degreees. It works for me. Also smaller frequent water changes seems to keep them spawning.

Feed them live food such as blackworms. My clowns (and all my paired fish spawn) on blackworms and clams. Even my 24 year old fireclowns spawn but I would try it in a separate tank as they don't always spawn on something that you can move.
Mine spawn in this bottle.

question about breeding clownfish

Does it matter if the two clownfish that a person wants to breed are siblings? Will they even breed? Will it weaken the genepool?

I would imagine your chances of seeing an unusual morph will increase... more recessive traits will be expressed in that scenario.

sorry to hijack your thread to ask my own question but i am new to the hobby and this brought about a thought. If my clowns spawn in my tank what are the chances of the babies survival. i see alot of posts about moving the pair to a dedicated tank does this have anything to do with keeping the spawn secluded from all other fish.

More about feed density required for the larvae, and being preyed upon by everything and their mom in the tank.
