Questions About the Physic's Behind Skimmers.

first thank you to every one who has posted about this before. it has made for some wonderful reading. I've read Escobal's book, & several threads of which Zephants, Hanhmeister, MrWilsons, & others have been of great influence.

At this point it seems that there is a great deal of difference between the physic's behind pinwheel & downdraft based skimmers. I was wondering if there are recommended readings on this. or possibly links to the mathematics & equations used to design both. or possibly areas of similarity that could be addressed such as if the 60-70 scfh of air in determining the neck column width. or 35-45 scfh for the riser column.

any input would be incredibly helpful.

I can't talk about the rocket science part skimmers I am far to simple of a person. I can tell you from my experience that 99% of all skimmers are over priced and don't do nearly what they claim. :fun4: I am curently running a HSA downdraft skimmer on my 150 mixed tank. Damn thing stands nearly 5 ft. tall and has big energy hog of a pump running it. This skimmer foams like crazy on the inside of the riser tube but I can tell ya that it takes me a month to fill the collection cup with skimmate. Other guys will brag that they fill their cup up every couple of days. I think the shape of the riser has alot to do with it. My riser is the same size all the way up to the collection cup. My next skimmer will have some kind of a cone shape. The only factual numbers on skimmers that I know of are the ones that say the bigger the skimmer you own is relative to the money you have wasted.

It sounds like you have done quite a bit of reading into skimmer design. Could you post up a couple of links to some good articles or recommend some books?

whatever the ultimate goal of this thread is, im sure it can be answered by looking at other peoples skimmer builds and not worrying about the physics behind it all.
 
 
as to the purpose of the thread. after reading tons of thread's, escobal's book & chapters from others. it seem's that the aspirating skimmers & induction based skimmers function differently from each other, in ways. beyond just their method of infusing air. which has given me several questions for which I can't seem to find answers. such as one obvious difference would be the size in mixing chamber. leading me to think that the needed contact time, takes place at different points in the skimmer.
