Quick HELP! Didnt acclimate properly!!

So I went to the LFS to check out their coral shipment today, and they are having a halloween sale. Anything that has orange on it was 30% off! So I picked up another onyx clown for my buddy. They are pretty much the same size. The newer one is a tad bigger, but with more transparent black than solid black. You can still see a lot of orange in his body.

BUT THE BAD PART!!

I was floating him in the tank, all power heads unplugged. Slowly giving the bag some water from the tank every 15minutes. I usually do this for about 2 hours or so when I acclimate a new fish.

But the bag tipped over and before I could grab it my new onyx clown was in the tank!! He hasent even been acclimating 10minutes, and has only had 1 turkey baster full of tank water mixed with the LFS water that was still in the bag. WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR AND HOW CAN I PREVENT IT IF HE STARTS TO FREAK OUT!

I turned off my power heads and pumps so I could feed my fish, and acclimate him for a couple hours because I figured he wasent going to eat for a couple days and be scared. BOY WAS I WRONG, he is acting like he has been in my tank for years! I expected the clowns to at least fight for a second, but they swim side by side!! NO FIGHTING AT ALL. He is going right for the mysis shrimp! Not even in my tank 3 minutes and he is eating like crazy!! The LFS showed him eat to me, and he even hand fed him.

Sometimes you get really lucky like that. Sometimes you have occurrences where your system is very similar to the LFS's system. (not the case with my Picasso that I ordered). But just one thing.....I wouldn't try that again;)

I have had that to happen to me, just keep an eye on it for awhile. Mine seemed to have no ill effects from it. GOOD LUCK

If the fish was healthy, it will probably be ok. Back before I knew any better, i used to acclimate all animals only for temperature. Besides snails, i didn't have as many loses as you may think... b

Not to be off subject, but those look like black and white ocellaris vs. onyx percs... But I'm glad it's doing well! Must have thought it was ok to come out of the bag!

He likes to play in the power head stream and then he swims above it, and back into it. Is that normal? I've also seen him/her have a like a siezure, but I believe this is part of establishing dominance?

Ya, I was checking out the onyx at the LFS and I had them on my mind. I wrote that but meant black, and then I was too late to edit it.

Hopefully they're getting paired up.. usually they'll have that seizure right in front of or very close to the other to show them they're "submitting." Good sign that the one you picked up was already a male or not yet sexed!

Considering how many people do little to no acclimation at all (and get away with it), I'd say relax and don't worry.

What store do you shop at normally? what LFS did you pick these guys up from. I'm going to visiting out there next week.

Thanks,
Bones

When I lived in Scottsdale (grew up there, and just moved 5 yrs ago) I used to go to Aquatouch of off 32nd st. It was the closest place to where I lived and they actually cared about the livestock. Have they gone down hill since?

Interesting.. oh well. i'm sure there's plenty others there anyhow! Phx is a dang big city. I just got my parents to move from there last Sept, they live up here in MT now. My sister-in-law is telling my brother they have to move because she's tired of being sick all the time from the pollution and what not... last time I went down there, the haze over down town is WAY worse then when I left.. Sorry to get off topic.

I love this place, I moved here from SF and I am buying a house out here. Thats when I am going start my 240g in-wall! I'm stoked! Haze? I never see a haze, unless im trying to watch the stars. But who does that now a days anyway? lol I've been here 4 years, no allergy's and I have only had a little cold. Never been really sick out here. Norcal sucks! Allergy's galore up there, and I got sick all the time. Gotta love the warm winters here in AZ! I'll take the city over the country any day of the week lol. And Why MT? Why not prescott, or flagstaff? No pollution up there.

I've got family up here... plus the scenery here is way better than Flag. I'm in a valley of mountains... I actually get seasons, 45 mins away from 3 ski resorts (don't ski but still a nice thought). The family and scenery was the main thing for the choice. The haze I'm talking about it when you're coming down the 51 and you see Phx from miles away and all you can see is this brown cloud hovering around downtown.. it's sickening. Other than that it's a nice place to live for people that like cities! I enjoyed it growing up there.

Haha I moved here because I hate seasons and the cold. Give me sunshine all year so I can go ride my motorcycles!! woo! One of my really good buddys moved to MT, he loves it up there. Haha I know the Haze you are talking about, once I drive about 45minutes out of the city I can see the stars. Cant see any stars in town.

But back on topic lol, my 2nd clown survived the first night in his new home with my really poor acclimatization. He wont sleep just yet, still swimming all over the place. But I think they are going to be happy little clowns! If they don't jump out of the tank... My last clown jumped out when I was sleeping, stupid fish stay in your water.

Try this: Go to Home Depot, get a 36" black window screen frame kit, cut it to the dimensions of your tank, and then go to the garden center near the weed mat and pick up "bird stop" (i think that's what it's called) and put that in instead of screen. The whole thing will cost about $10-$15. The bird screen is like 1/4" squares of plastic/thread. Doesn't stop any light but it'll stop fish from jumping out. I put it on my tank. I got the idea from a guy that has a thread called 45g cube I believe.. can't find the thread at the moment though. But I figure a nice $10 item would be better than losing a $50 fish or whatever price you paid!
