I just got my 250 watt mh in the mail, (used) and Im hoping someone can tell me about how far away from top of water i should hang it?

I have eggctate and screens ready for acclimation so i figure i would hang it where it supposed to be (versus lowering it daily or whatever)

It depends on what you want to keep in your tank. We have adjustable wires on our fixture, so we started it out about 12" from the tank, now it's about 8" from tank. But we have 150W MH. It's easier to work in the tank at the 12" height, but the acropora we have likes the 8" height better I think.

so 4 inches is to close then hu? i just put another thread in the lighting forum with pics. i went from 130watt pc's to 250watt mh for a 45 gal tank.

It doesent seem to brite.. (egg crate and 3 screens on top for acclimation purposes)

Seems like 6-8" should be about right.
When screens are gone it should look bright enough.
Are bulbs new?
I believe MH are good for about a year.
I like the idea of having a way to pull them up out of the way.

the bulb isent new. but not very old. my polyps are reacting badly so im gonna raise it up. it looks so dark in there right now!

Depending on what was lighting before has a lot of bearing on this. You want to get around the same amount of light as you had before. This can be done with elevation and a screen.

If you get eggcrate, it will cut down the light by a pretty good chunk. If you do not do this, you will give your coral the equivelant to a sunburn and could wipe them out. Then over about 2 weeks you can slowly increase the amount of light.

Set your lights at 18" and a chunk of eggcrate (sitting on top of tank) give it a couple days and then you can move the light an inch closer, day later inch closer etc. When you get to about 12" you can the lift the light back up and remove eggcrate. This should be about day 7 or 8. Now the light is back at 18" with no eggcrate and you can start lowering again. Just watch the coral for any sign of stress. If it shows, backup a step or stop where you are for a day or 2.

Main thing is taking your time. If the above is going to fast, just double the time between moves. You are in no hurry... better this take an extra week than 1 day to fast :( hope this helps

(if you have no eggcrate I think you can go to around 25" for the same effect. I do not have a par meter or I would check it for you, sorry)

I Had 130 watts pc, 1 white, 1 actinic
took em off.
Put on 1 250 watt mh WITH egg crate and 4 sheets of screen.
The tank looked really dark to me, but everything started reacting bad.
So.. I raised the light to about 16 inches. And ill leave the screen
and most likelly start off with maybe 3 hours of mh light and continue to lengthen it.
slow is no problem

davocean.. no.. i did with the pcs. I dont even know what kinda bulb this is. but i plan to get a hamilton 14k.....(i think thats right) :D
