Ok I have 25 pounds of LR in a tub "curing" My tank hasnt cycled yet that I am aware of if it has it was a very small cycle. It has 0 nitrites ans 0 amm. and 20ppm nitrate. I bought like agronite (sp) for the substrate, 7 pounds of cured LR, 2 damsels, 5 red legged hermits and a turbo snail. The tank has been set up for about 2 weeks or so. Ok My question is The LR in the tub has high ammonia levels I have had it in there for about a week and its not changing I have done 2 50% water changes and one 100% (along with cleaning out the tub) It still has high ammonia levels. Is it ok to put it in my tank and let it cycle? Oh its a 50G tank btw. Thanks again.

You can cycle the rock in the tank but will smell bad and still require frequent water changes. the ammonia could cause a prob with the inhabitants of the tank if it gets to high.

I wouldn't. I would leave the rock in the tub for at least 2 more weeks. But pick up a big chunk of the rock and take a big sniff. It if stinks to high heaven it is not ready. If it smells salt like and rather fresh then it is ready. I don't now that I would take a chance hurting that poor defenseless damsel.

Have patience my friend.

Regards,

Pat

I dont have those things :( I want it to go faster :( I know I know thats not how it works. Should I keep up the water changes in the tub? If so, how often? I just did the 100% yesterday and cleaned out the tub and the ammonia level is between 1.5 and 3.0 mg/l. I have been doing water changes every other day or every 2 days. The ammonia doesn't seem to be decreasng much though. Any advice?

have patients, the rock will cure, a skimmer running on your tub will help a lot but you want to make sure its fully cured

think of it this way.

you are having a hard time waiting for the rock to cure to set up.

how would it be to keep having fish die, cleaning up, doing it over and over again for the next year, all because you couldnt wait 2 weeks.

take it slowwwwwwwwwwwww

imagine waiting 6 weeks while you quarantine the fish you just spent $100 on, wondering if it will ever make it alive into the main tank, and how long itll live for.

try and work on your anxiety now, so you can better deal with it in the future.

about the rock; how much water movement do you have going?

remember the rock is the "filter" so if you arent getting that fresh water in and out of the rock, then itll stay funky a lot longer than it has to.

keep that water flowing.

Webster's definition of patient:

"bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint"

Like Tom Petty says, "the waiting is the hardest part"

In the meantime, complain away, that's why we're here! lol

Thanks guys. I have a maxi-Jet 1200 in there its only a 10 gallon tub. It is a lot of water movement. It has a 20 gallon wisper power bio filter on it too, And a heater wich is set at about 76 degrees. So with the water changes how often? How much? Sorry to be a pain.

hi,
Like timmy_boy188 said, adding a skimmer will definitely make the process faster. With that, you dont have to do too many water changes. Good luck..

Ok here is another question what skimmer do you guys reccomend? I hear odyessa and sea clone are not good ways to go. What are your oppinions?

$90 and up on ebay. usually depending on condition and the variety of pumps that they are sold with. There is one on RC dry goods forum from san diego that comes with a mag3 pump for. He's asking $140.
