Quick sump question

Is it better to split the drain water 75% to skimmer and 25% to Refugium?

OR

Let all water pass through the skimmer section first, then pump a fraction of the water to the refugium using the return pump and valve?

Currently running a mag5 as a return probably pushing 300gph and a Vertex IN180 @ 180 gph

Either works, but the 25/75 split is likely slightly better. It's what Melev is currently doing, so it's hard to say it's not better. :)

I would remove as much nutrients you can with the skimmer and let the fuge get whats left over. You can't get close to 100% of DOCs no matter what. You can probably get at best 30% and that doesn't happen on a single pass. The fuge will grow the same regardless.

IMO it probably doesn't matter depending on the volume of water draining from the tank. Ideally you want just the surface water to go to the skimmer. Separating the water out at the sump is not effective since it has already been remixed in the drain line.
