Quiet One Pump: serious manufacturing defect

Just thought I'd let you guys know what I found-

I've been using a Quiet One model 1200 as my return pump from my sump for a few months now. It has been stalling once in a while so I figured I'd see if I need to clean the impeller. When I opened it up I found that the cylindrical magnet which the turbine is connected to, is completely broken into 3 equally sized peices. I'm thinking of calling them to see if they'll send a new impeller because of how ridiculous it is. Anyone had a similar experience?

I hated my QO. It would fail to restart every single time I powered it down to do tank maintenence.

Personally, I've had pretty good experiences with Quiet Ones in the past. I've used both their old models and new, small and large, and haven't had a problem. Not saying that your pump doesn't have some serious issues, because obviously you want one magnet here, but I don't want QO getting a bad rap off of this one instance, or however many instances will be shared in this thread. You definitely deserve a new impeller, maybe even a new pump, as the messed up impeller might have put serious undue stress on the motor. Quiet One is a good pump, not an exceptional one. The price is good for the quality you get, as it is much less expensive than other pumps of similar quality IMO. This example here is why, IMO, they are an inexpensive pump. Sometimes you get a great pump, sometimes you get a POS. Quality control is a big part of why some pumps are so expensive, I think.

I have 2 QO 4000s that have been pretty reliable with bi-monthly cleaning. its very important to clean these pumps regularly. I actually run 1 and have the spare pump clean and ready to go when I want to service the pump, I just swap out the extra pump for the dirty used pump. Then I soak the used pump for a few days in white vinegar, scrub it up, and let rest until I swap out again. Dont let calcium deposit on the impeller...bad news.

BTW- sugar, there isnt room enough on RC for both our avatars, dont be stealing my style!

These pumps collect calcium build up like a hobo collects nickles. dont give them enough time to stall and ruin the magnets. Which brings this thought to my attention. Maybe the impeller stalled, heating it up until it ran smoothly again then cooling it down. The expansion and compression of the impeller magnet could have caused it to crack maybe...

btw, the impeller isnt covered in their warranty and will cost prolly 25-35 plus shipping. I know because I had a QO300o with my first tank that I neglected and calcium built up and it broke.

Yea I kind of just realized that, the cheapest I could get a replacement impeller after shipping is almost $20, which is almost the cost of the pump brand new...lol. Maybe I'll try out Maxi-Jet's new line of pumps. Can't beat Maxi-Jet as far as reliability is concerned.

Unless anyone else has a good suggestion for a 300-500 gph sump pump pushing water ~4 feet vertical?

Rio Aqua Plus line of pumps...

Over a year w/o cleaning and running great!

ive had no problems with my 2 QO4000. just do normal maintenance on them and there will be no issues. they are an excellent pump for the money.

for those not cleaning your pumps- you'll be sorry. may not be today or tomorrow but it will happen.

I had the same issues with the QO 9000, although I did contact the company and they sent me a new pump no questions, so I'm thinking that there have been more than one complaint over these pumps. IMO, when they changed styles(from metal to plastic) so went the integrity of these pumps. Their customer service was great, but the new pump that was sent still sits in the box(I really wanted my cash back, I don't want to use another pump that is going to shut off, get jammed, or not start up after doing maintenance or if the power goes off, not acceptable).
I use Mag-Drives mostly and always did before, but the price and the power consumption is why I tried the QO, no more. Been using the same Mag-Drive for over 3yrs now and never needed cleaned, runs like a champ still. Good luck, if you contact the company they will more than likely send you a new pump altogether.
